Packing & Travel

Nov 25, 2008 19:56

Well it had to happen eventually. I finished packing all my stuff, or at least as much of it as I could. I left a small amount of chaos for my mom to contend with, but that will be ok. thanks to all of you who came by to help me pack. I would still be sitting in a pile of chaos without your help.

In typical Me fashion, I managed to severely injure myself just before going. I was leaving my storage unit an this guy and his mom were having trouble closing the door on the freight elevator. so I offered to help. well I clearly do not know my own strength, I pulled down to hard on the door and it slammed down on my right hand. It hurt like a B@!#$!?. However I did not feel anything brake. My thumb was hurt the worst. I had jason look at it just before I left, and he said it was not broken. Now two days later, I have a hand that probably looks like Evander Holyfield's after a good fight, but I can type and use my thumb, which bends correctly but still hurt. I may go see the nurse at the UN base tomorrow.

Saying goodbye to everyone outside my apartment was intense. I nearly broke down in tears when I looked around my apartment for the last time. The place looked like home, all of my furniture was there, but there was nothing of me in it. Spitfire had left in the morning, the pictures had been gone for days. IT felt like the empty shell of my life in DC.

OK now I am getting lugubrious. Back to the time-line of events.

The flights were nothing special. Except I would like to never fly coach again. Business class is heaven, and mainly because people leave you alone.By not having someone's 60 year old grandmother poking you in the ribs with the newest copy of Robert Ludlum, it turned an ordinary flight into a heaven of nothing. Nothing Happened, nothing went wrong, nothing bothered me. Heaven! I slept listened to music, watched a movie, and slept. We got into Frankfurt at around 7 am ( 1 am DC). I went to the business class lounge and called mom, emailed a couple of people and posted on facebook. The flight to Rome took off at 10 am. It was quick, and we arrived in Rome around noon. Then I sat in Rome for four hours. It was grey, cold and rainy. The airport staff were rude, all wanted to do was go to bed. Then the flight got delayed by an hour. But it took off eventually and I landed in Brindisi around 7 pm.

By 8 pm I was in the hotel. there was a brief mix-up about which hotel I was staying at. the two main hotels that service the UN are next to each other on the same block. After getting a room I unpacked a bit, an realized I had brought about half a suitcase of clothes too many. I will ship a bunch back if I ever get my visa to Sudan.

I met a bunch of people traveling to the UNLB (UN Logistics Base) training program. we had dinner and then called it a night.

That was the end of my travels. For the present future updates will not be so long, but hopefully funnier. Full of funny UN jokes and human rights jargon.
