Question for mothers out there:

Were you (or anyone you know) traumatised by having a natural birth without an epidural? Also, do you consider wanting to avoid trauma to yourself to be valid reasoning behind having an epidural for pain relief during labour?

I was having an argumentdiscussion with a couple of ladies (one 8 months pregnant) at lunchtime today and their opinion was that it would be better in their opinion to have an epidural for the pain of labour rather than being traumatised by the birth for months afterwards. I made comment that I would much rather use as many alternative methods of pain relief as possible rather than using drugs, particularly administered via an epidural due to the associated issues with the epidural itself and other complications that can arise. They then made comment that my using drugs for asthma prevention was the same as using drugs for pain relief in labour so following my logic in not wanting drugs in labour, I shouldn't take my asthma preventative... Is it just me or do those two arguments not go together? Even leaving out the very different drug classes and dosages involved, how does a drug I have no choice but to take if I want to keep breathing compare with drugs I have a choice in taking to relieve my experience of pain during a natural birth process?

Gah. This has got me somewhat upset but I'm still having a bit of trouble explaining to myself exactly why. I don't believe the two things are related at all but can't be coherent about why I consider it sensible to take my asthma preventative but would highly prefer to not take drugs during labour. Help?
