Day Twenty-One: Favourite female character screwed over by canon
Lacy - The Expendables
Lacy is one of the two female characters in Expendables 1 who actually get names and a bit of character development.
And it sucks so badly that I think even the hooker, Toll is hanging out with got a more real portrayal of how a relationship works.
Lacy is Lee’s girlfriend, a beautiful lady who cheats on Lee and gets herself a new boyfriend while he is away on a mission (and more than eager to return because he bought her an amazing present). It’s of course terrible for him to find out that she dumped him and he tells her that she has chosen the wrong guy - BUT ONLY AFTER WE LEARN THAT HE WAS AWAY FOR A MONTH WITHOUT GIVING HER THE SLIGHTEST HINT WHAT HE WAS DOING!!!!!! Seriously, Lacy tells him that he hasn’t seen him in over a month, she says that even though they have been dating for way longer than that she still doesn’t know how he earns his money but Lee just demands that she trust him and drives off.
WHAT KIND OF BEHAVIOUR IS THAT?!?!? How in the world can he ask so much off her when he offers absolutely nothing in return (JEWELS DON’T COUNT FOR FUCK’S SAKE!)?? How dare he judging her for getting herself a new boyfriend? After a month of silence - no calls, no letters, not even a post-it! - what was she supposed to think? She was probably worried sick over what could have had happened to him when he didn’t return any of her calls, when he didn’t open the door whenever she drove to his flat? AND LEE IS JUST TELLING HER THAT NONE OF THIS MATTERS AND THAT SHE CHOOSE THE WRONG GUY? WHAT A DICK MOVE, LEE! SERIOUSLY! YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE THE GOOD GUY HERE!
Moreover and to add injury to insult, Lacy’s new boyfriend abuses her after he finds out that she still has feelings for Lee. He hurts her badly and although Lee comes to her rescue - ALL OF THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF HE HADN’T TREATED HER LIKE A PLASTIC DOLL IN THE FIRST PLACE!!
And since this wasn’t enough already apparently, the second film heaps even more insult on the poor lady: Barney constantly tells Lee that he shouldn’t trust Lacy again because she cheated on him (SHE DIDN’T!) and doesn’t approve at all of their relationship (which could be jealousy, but still xD). And then there is this deleted scene where Lee asks his team what they think about the cheating (WHICH SHE DIDN’T COMMIT FOR FUCK’S SAKE) and they tell him that there will always be doubts now on Lee’s side and that he probably can’t trust her ever again - BECAUSE OF WHAT? BECAUSE OF HIS OWN STUPIDITY GOD FUCKING DAMN IT.
I really love this movie, I adore every last piece of overused clichés and tropes - but this relationship just ruins the first ten minutes for me and I don’t know what everyone involved was thinking. (I probably need to listen to the commentary on the DVD to get some hints. BUT RIGHT NOW? I just wanna sit here seething with rage).
Day Twenty-Two: Favourite female character you love but everyone else hates
Lucy Liu as Doctor Watson - Elementary
I don’t think that everyone else hates her; in fact, the fanbase has become much, much nicer and quieter since it became clear that Elementary was here to stay.
No, I don’t like some of her backstory, no I don’t think that Elementary is doing a better job than Sherlock in every aspect - but they put Lucy Liu, a woman of colour, in one of the most famous roles 19th century literature has to offer and she pulls it off amazingly. She is so much more apart from being Sherlock’s sidekick - she enjoys sports, theatre, she reads and is also fascinated by the world Sherlock has to offer - WITHOUT THEM BECOMING A COUPLE! FINALLY! YES! (I ship it though. Like hell XD Much more than BBC Sherlock and don't ask me why...)
Day Twenty-Three: Favourite female platonic relationship
Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes - Janet van Dyne and Carol Danvers
Apart from the fact that Carol Danvers (aka Ms. Mavel aka Captain Marvel) is the coolest superhero ever - I adored her and Janet in the cartoon version. Carol joins the team at the beginning of the second season but before that Janet is overjoyed to see her and gets all defensive when her friend is threatened. They have a marvellous relationship, talking about their teammates and the missions, laughing together and trusting each other. It’s especially wonderful because they are so different: Carol is all business and calculated fighting (and joking), whereas Janet is outgoing, bubbly, brash even and still they share this perfect bond. Watch this, the first episode with Carol... and God I love that intro xD.
Day Twenty-Four: Favourite female romantic relationship
Bernard and Bianca - The Rescuers and Rescuers down Under
They were my first OTP, way before I knew what that meant (or that it existed xD). Bianca is fierce, powerful, always in for an adventure, curios and kind to everyone who deserves it. She is the one to see Bernard’s potential but she is not pining after him, she is more or less oblivious to his advances (or at least she pretends to be because she likes to see him struggle, the wonderful great diva she is xD). But they trust each other and would never leave each other behind and I always imagined them to continue on every adventure that Bianca drags Bernard into and then they would have a long, nice vacation so Bernard could calm down again... awwww, those two. <333
Day Twenty-Five: Favourite mother/daughter and/or sister relationship
Hitomi, Ai and Nami - Cat’s Eye
The three con artist sisters who try to steal back their late father’s art collection share a beautiful and powerful family bond. Hitomi, the oldest one, acts as a mother substitute for Ai and sometimes even Nami, the sisters trust each other, share their losses and successes with each other and build their own little family to keep each other safe and sound. <3
