Title:  I Don’t Like To Lose

Pairing:  Alicia/Will

Summary:  His was an act perfected over a millennium, he didn’t like to lose but why? Set within a few days/weeks of “Closing Arguments”

Author’s Note:  I hope this is not confusing; basically Will is talking as the Judge and Jury are speaking.

Words:  492

They were waiting for the verdict to come in. Will had received a phone call ten minutes ago, saying the jury was ready, so Alicia and Will were now seated at the defense table waiting for judge and jury to enter.

“I don’t like to lose.”

“I know.”

“It’s not because . . . it’s because I want to win.”

“Clearly.”

“This is not coming out right,” Will sighed and Alicia knew it would be useless if she said anything, she knew he needed time to formulate whatever he was trying to say, because he would only get more frustrated if it didn’t come out correctly the next time he tried to speak.”

Judge Morris entered the courtroom then and Alicia stood up and stared straight ahead as Her Honor called court to session.

“As I understand, the Jury has a verdict . . .”

“I want to win every case because”

“Mr. Foreman, have you reached a verdict?

“I want you to think I’m good enough”

“Yes your honor.”

“Worthy enough”

“How say you?”

“To be with you.”

“We the jury, find the defendant”

“Worthy of you.”

“Guilty as charged.”

Once Judge Morris had left the courtroom, Alicia slumped back into her chair at the defense table. Will was talking to the client, explaining that they would appeal the verdict if the client wanted, that some of the evidence that Judge Morris had allowed in could be contested on appeal. But Alicia didn’t hear any of this, she sat in her chair, thinking about how often Will surprised her still.

After Will finished talking to the client, he went back to the defense table to gather his brief case and noticed that Alicia was still sitting there.

“Alicia, are you okay?”

“What? . . . uh, no.”

Concerned, Will sat down next to her and reached his hand to cover the one she had on the table’s surface.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, getting more worried with each breathe.

“You.”

“What did I do?”

And her response came out so rapidly, he barely had time to process it. “I can’t believe you; I can’t believe you would think you weren’t enough. I don’t care if you win or lose but that you try your best. I can’t believe you would think that you weren’t worthy.”

“I” and the great lawyer was at a loss for words.

“I . . . no! You deserve the best Alicia, I just want to be the best for you.”

And she kissed him right there. She didn’t care that they were sitting in a courtroom, which at any moment, a judge or bailiff could walk into the room. She didn’t know if any members of the press were still in the back of the room packing up. She didn’t care that her husband could walk into the room.

Will was the best he could be, just for her and that was more than enough for her.
