The Truth Be Known It had been raining all day but was starting to clear up now that night was well settled in. Street lights sparkled on the still wet pavement. Kat walked uneasily down the sidewalk to McDonalds. He was only now getting his lunch break from the computer shop and even though Shine had told him he had nothing to fear, he still kept looking over his shoulder to be sure he was not being followed.
Kat was still spooked by the revelation that the man Shine worked for as gofer/housekeeper was a vampire. Not some want-to-be pretender but a real undead blood drinking vampire and Shine was his live-in slave and meal ticket.
One second Kat was walking alone. The next Joseph was walking companionably beside him as though he’d been there all along. Kat tried not to show how scared he was, but the increased speed of his heartbeat was unmistakable to the man beside him.
“Are you going to kill me?” Kat asked, trying to sound like it was a joke but not really succeeding.
“Hadn’t planed on it.” Joseph shrugged, “Are you going to tell anyone about me?”
“Who would I tell? I’d end up in a locked ward if you didn’t get me first.”
“Most likely.” Kat wasn’t sure which option he was confirming.
They had reached the McDonald’s and Kat didn’t know whether to go in or not. To Joseph the smell from the fast food restaurant was repulsive and he didn’t want to go in there. “Let me take you to dinner, somewhere other than here.” Joseph offered.
“Dinner for whom,” Kat said suspiciously, “you or me?” He didn’t know he could be clever when he was scared.
Joseph smiled. “Yours.”
“I only have a half hour for lunch.” He said, kind of hoping Joseph would take that as a hint and go away, but not really expecting him too.
“Call your work and tell them you’ll not be back in tonight.” It was an order not a request and Joseph locked eyes with him and didn’t let him look away. After a brief hesitation Kat nervously called his work and told them he had a sudden emergency but he would be back tomorrow.
Putting his phone back in his pocket, he asked. “What now?”
“Now we find somewhere to sit down.”
They walked a little further up the street to the café on the next corner and took a booth in the back of the room. The waitress knew Kat and greeted him by name, asked him if he wanted his usual to go?
“Eating in tonight Sadie, but the usual sounds good.” Kat said somehow managing to sound cheerful.
Sadie turned to Joseph, “What can I get you tonight handsome?”
“Just coffee for me, thank you.”
Kat sat uneasily and waited for Joseph to say something. Joseph looked quite at ease, if not a little amused at Kat’s nervousness. Why shouldn’t he be amused, Kat thought, he holds all the cards.
“Shine loves you, you know.” Joseph said, “He can’t hide his feeling from me.” Kat didn’t say anything. What could he say? The vampire continued. “You are either very brave or very stupid or very much in love to have waited for him in the house the other night after what you saw. Most people would have run away.”
“Most likely.” Kat answered. Joseph smiled. Kat wondered which option he was agreeing with.
“So which are you? I don’t believe you are stupid.”
“I’ve never considered myself brave.” Did he just admit he was in love?
“And love can make fools of us all.”
“I’m sitting here with you aren’t I?”
“Yes you are.” Joseph leaned over the table as if to tell him a secret, “Shine is worth it.”
Before Kat could answer Sadie brought over Kat’s usual tuna melt and fries, and Joseph’s coffee, she left the check on the table telling them to holler if they needed anything else.
Joseph leaned back in his seat and said, “I know that Shine told you about his people and him being my servant. But I wanted to make things very clear to you. Shine might love you and you him, but never forget that he is mine, he is my property, I own him body and blood and I’m not letting him go.” Joseph’s voice was as cold as steel, “But his heart is his own and he’s given it to you. Don’t hurt him. And don’t try to turn him against me. The consequences would be horrific for both of you.”
Kat hadn’t touched his dinner. He certainly didn’t have any appetite after being threatened by the vampire sitting opposite him. Joseph took a sip of his coffee and winced at the bitterness. He waited for Kat to think about what he had just said before speaking again. “You are welcome in my house. You are welcome to love Shine. I don’t mind your company and would like the chance to get to know you better.”
Suddenly Joseph was sitting right beside him, his lips only inches from Kat’s ear, or his neck. “As long as you don’t do anything stupid you have nothing to fear from me Kris. I don’t want to have to hurt you.” Kat went white with shock. Joseph had used his real name, the name only his mother still used. Even Shine hadn’t asked him about his name yet. How did Joseph know it?
The next moment Joseph was standing by the table and picking up the check like nothing had happened and saying loud enough for Sadie to hear him. “I have to go now. It was nice talking with you again. Come over after work tomorrow, Shine will be happy to see you. Don’t worry about the time; you know we keep late hours.” He waved good-bye, paid the check and disappeared out into the night.
It was a long time before Kat left the little cafe.
