Prompt 148: Leaving the garden
Notes: Not part of any other story of mine. (yet)

Ami stared at the open gates. As far as she could remember the iron gate in the high brick wall that surrounded her world had never been open. She had often wondered about the gate and why it was there. When she asked anyone about it they simply shrugged. A few even asked her “What gate?” She’d been able to see through the thick bars that the other side opened onto a field of grass, boarded by trees, and studded with pointy rock outcropping. It didn’t look all that different from her side of the wall, just a little bit… rougher? Like there was no one on that side to take care of it.

But now the gate was open. How and why she didn’t know. What was she supposed to do? Curiosity got the best of her and Ami took a few tentative steps past the gate.

Wooshe! Bang! The door closed behind her, and no amount of shouting, and pounding, and pushing, or pulling would open again. Scrunching up her courage and her face she turned her back on the door to face her future.
