Aside from the obvious upheaval of moving and the time it takes, and the loss of my beloved roommate, the last couple of days have been awful and stressful in all sorts of crazy unexpected ways.
Yesterday, I had a terrible scare. I thought I had both of the cats locked in the bathroom while my brother brought in some furniture, but when he left and I went to release the cats, Pablo was nowhere to be found. I assumed that he was just hiding somewhere else in the apartment and briefly looked for him then figured he'd come out. I checked outside the door and around the apartment complex and didn't see him, so I thought he must be inside. He's never shown much interest in running out the door, so it seemed unlikely that he would have gone far. After I hadn't seen him in quite a while, though, I began to panic. I opened a can of cat food and he still didn't come out. At that point, I hadn't seen him in a couple of hours, and I was seriously worried. I left my friends who were helping me move here at the apartment with the door open (and Carlos locked in the bathroom) and wet food out, so that Pablo could come back if he wanted. I walked up and down the neighborhood looking under bushes and in shady corners. No sign. Then I took my friends with me and we went around again, with Carlos on a leash hoping that his meowing would convince Pablo to come back. This time, we put up lost cat posters as we went, just on the 3 blocks closest to my street. I was beginning to consider calling everyone to ask you all to help search. We got home, and there was Pablo sitting in the living room. We had left one friend behind with the door open, and while he was in the other room, apparently Pablo wandered back in. He was dusty as if he had been outside rolling in the dirt, but other than that, he gave no indication that anything was wrong. I was so relieved to see him. It was such a horrible, scary few hours thinking he was lost.
Today, a new fun and unexpected thing went wrong. I was playing a DVD on my computer while sorting through my clothes and continuing the move across the hall when my computer shut down. I tried turning it back on, and it started to boot up, then shut down again. It wasn't acting as if the battery were dead, and besides it was plugged in. After freaking out about it for a while, trying to give it time to fully charge, I realized that it was charging for a minute or two, then losing the connection to the plug. It was just my long-fraying power cord finally giving up, so I made an emergency trip to the Apple store at the Grove (a nightmare at 8pm on a Friday night!) and purchased a new power adapter, and all is well.
I'll be glad when the moving is done.
