On Saturday, I'm going to a sock hop. It might really just be a swing dance; I'm not sure shoe removal is actually required. But either way, I'd love company. Lots of company. Because I'm going with my friend who is an excellent dance teacher and generally fabulous but is also bringing a boyfriend. I would seriously prefer being a large group rather than a third wheel. It should be fun, really. There are beginner's lessons starting at 9:30, which I will need because I can't dance to save my life. There will be drinks. It should be goofy dancy retro fun, really. This event happens every month at a bar in Burbank, but I've never been before so I can't vouch for how cool it is or isn't.
Here's some info from the event's
myspace page:
Nifty 50's Sock Hop is not a band. It's a dance party on the last Saturday of every month where the DJ plays the original recordings from the early years of rock and roll music, 1954-1964. There's a beginner partner dance lesson from 9:30-10pm(included with $7 cover charge) and then the party rocks and rolls from 10pm-1:30. 50's attire is strongly encouraged. The party includes a hulahoop contest, limbo contest, and dance contest(previous contest prizes have included CD's, In n Out Gift Certificates, and tix to see Gladys Knight and The Temptations). There's a full bar, food is served until 11pm and there are dartboards and a pool table. The patio out front is perfect for smoking, or necking. Don't be square, see ya there! 21+.
So, please join me. It should be lots of fun. And if nothing else, you can watch me embarrass myself with my complete lack of rhythm.
