1. Slaid Cleaves - Broke Down
Damn if this isn't one of the best stories of love gone wrong. My heart pours out for Sherry and Billy...and well, for some reason I love songs with the name Billy in them.
2. PJ Harvey - C'Mon Billy
See what I mean about the Billy songs? She begs her love to come back. Now, I dunno about the begging, but it's a damn good song. And she's so fucking tough.
3. Neko Case - Margaret Vs. Pauline
Maybe I'm in the mood for storytellin' songs.
4. Andrew Bird - Tables and Chairs
"There will be snacks!" Andrew Bird's last album is brilliant anyway, but I love that in one song he rhymes with fratricide and in another he rejoices about the presence of snacks. This is why I keep a stocked snack drawer.
5. Tapes 'N Tapes - In Houston
I hate Houston, but I like this song a lot. A little of Cream's "White Room" mixed with some cool dissonant vocals here and there and a nice summer-night-driving melody in between.
6. Vetiver - Been So Long
I love good building songs. This is one. The guy's got a great, subtle timber to his voice and the sentiment is sweet. The harmonies slay me.

7. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Straight To You
Mr. Cave is fine when lovelorn, angry or sleeping. I don't care. He's a master. I like to imagine that he and actor Noah Taylor (a Cave doppelganger) are both singing this to me.

Record Hop - Spider Bite
Not only are Ashley and Scott the coolest rock couple, but their band knows how to play their instruments and fucking wail. I love the changes in tempo on this one. "Oh, you're bringin' me down!" Of course, the whole album is choice but I had to pick a song.
