This will be my second to last planned entry on the Hyperion's construction, because I have finished most of the planned work as of today. I have a few detail things here and there that I'll be doing probably over the next few months, but I'm not going to be focusing nearly so much effort on it as I have to this point. The interior remains largely unfinished, but I'm satisfied with just the exterior; besides, I just don't think I could do it much justice with a 1 meter/block resolution, especially at 2/3 scale. The next post I make will show the final screen shots.
A few of the screen shots in this post were taken with the texture pack I'm using most of the time now. It's a 32x32 based on DokuRPG with some modifications to fit my own tastes.
The first thing to do after the engine block was outlined was complete the engine shroud. I needed that in place before I could adequately plan where the main engines would go. This next pic shows the engine shroud completed, for the most part, along its outer edges. There's some dirt scaffolding where I was thinking of putting the main engines. As it turned out, I ended up moving them all down a couple blocks and shifting the side engines out a couple blocks as well.
Once the engine scaffolding was in place, I began assembling the main engines themselves. Since I had filled the wing engines with lava to try to show their fuel/power source, I thought it would be in-keeping with the theme to do the same with the main engines. These ones presented a bit of a challenge, however, because I didn't have a whole lot of room in which to expand each of them straight out from where they were. As a matter of fact, I needed them all to go upward quite a bit so I would have room for a potential cargo bay later. So I decided to have them all come out of a central compression section and split into the 4 main exhaust cones. It's a little hard to see what the structure is exactly in this next picture; all the glass makes for difficult depth-perception.
After burning myself several times and many trips to the Nether to pick up lava (thanks to our Bukkit mod), and even falling in once, I managed to fill the whole thing with lava. Let me tell you, working with that much lava is tedious and delicate.
This next one is from the rear after I had filled in the backing around the engines and separating the shroud from the internals of the main engine block.
This was after some modification to the top of the engine shroud to fill in the fin at the top of the rear of the Hyperion in the reference images. Not a whole lot different here from the previous one, just some more complete-ness.
Another shot from the port side, allowing you to see the engine block with the newly completed main generator (above and behind the bridge). The lighting's kind of bad. I was having a hard time getting good screenshots that day; if it wasn't raining in-game, it was clouds all over the place, or it was dark.
This one is another shot showing the entirety of the engine block. It's got a bit better view of the main generator atop the bridge and you can just see the fin poking up over the rear.
And this last one is from atop the engine block. I realized I had never given you a shot of the nose section from behind after it was completed.
