So I've been on summer break for a month now. But I've been busy checking off things on my to-do list. This is what I've been up to since my last post:
I got to participate in a few more deliveries and handle more newborns, so I'm feeling pretty confident for when mine comes out (which I hope will be soon).
I failed the screening test for Gestational Diabetes, but I totally passed the follow-up test. I'm glad I don't have pregnancy-induced diabetes. I got so sad at the thought of having to limit my sugar intake and the possibility of having to take insulin to regulate my sugar level. But apparently the result from the screening test was a fluke. I think I was just stressed/dehydrated and therefore my sugar level was higher than usual.
I went to see an Angels game. I haven't seen one in a while. I don't know what it is, but baseball is really fun to watch live (but not on tv). I think it's the atmosphere in the stadium, with the crowd and good friends around :)
We went up to Humboldt for Russell's graduation. There's a place there that sells this ice cream called Dutch Orange Chocolate: tasty tasty chocolate ice cream with orange chocolate pieces. Soooooo fabulous! On the way home, though, my air conditioner decided to give out: in the middle of farm-country on the 5 freeway, where the temperature teetered somewhere between 101F and 105F, and the scent of farm fertilizer hung heavily on the air. To add to it, we made a bathroom stop and the gas station we picked didn't have a soda fountain (so no ice cold drink), and their freezer only had empty boxes of ice cream to taunt me. On top of that, my windshield got hit with a nut/bolt so now there's a crack on my windshield that I had just gotten replaced back in Feb (it got hit back in Nov when we went to Arizona and I barely got it replaced in Feb). Fortunately, my [temperamental] air conditioner decided to work again after the temperature dipped to about 91F-92F. At that point, we were near Valencia and the sun had already set. Heh.
To try to be more social, I went to an end-of-the-semester beach bash with my classmates from the nursing program. It was very, very windy and sand got all over the place, including the food and drinks. After a couple of hours, I decided to head home. But not before a bird got a chance to poop on me (and another classmate). It landed on my hair near my right ear, to be exact. Yup, just my luck, right? Needless to say, I hopped in the shower as soon as I got home.
We finally decided on a name for our baby: Tristan. We tried out several names, giving each name one week, and this is the one that stood out for us. A lot of people have told us that Tristan is a unisex name. And apparently, Tristan is a knight of the round too. I'm just glad we have a name now :)
I also finally got to clip my toe-nails. I know it doesn't seem like much of an accomplishment. But when you've got a belly the size of a watermelon and you're trying to reach your toes...well, it took a while but it's finally done. And for a couple of weeks now, I've just been wearing sandals because it's hard to put socks and shoes on these days. Especially when my feet are swollen.
Other baby-related stuff: I finished knitting a blanket for Tristan. We're planning on taking him home in it :) His room is pretty much set-up, with a crib, dresser, and changing table. It's kind of weird, replacing my drum set with baby furniture. Heh.
In the meantime, I'm just getting bigger and bigger. But mostly just my belly. It's getting harder and harder to move around, and I have to consciously make an effort to slow down. Gaining this much weight (about 30 pounds now) in a relatively short amount of time has definitely affected my center of gravity and totally thrown off what little balance/coordination/spatial sense I had to begin with. It's also hard to get in/out of a car seat, the sofa, my bed, or anything that goes from sitting/laying to standing or vice versa. Lesson learned: make sure my ab muscles are well-toned before getting pregnant :P
And by the way, Tristan's favorite thing to kick is my spleen. His favorite punching bag is my right ovary. And he really likes to bash his head on my bladder. But I think there are times when he gets bored and just goes to town with any nearby organ I have, like my stomach or my other ovary. It's weird, 'cause sometimes it tickles, and sometimes it just plain hurts. And his hiccups are another weird sensation: it's a small thumping feeling over my whole belly, because his whole body is moving.
I've been asked if I'm nervous about labor/delivery. Earlier in my pregnancy, I was all like, "I don't want to get induced and I hope I don't have a C-section, blah blah blah." Now, at almost 36 weeks, I just can't wait to get this baby out. I guess at this point, most pregnant women are more concerned about getting the baby out and feeling comfortable again, than worrying about the pain during L&D.
People talk about sleepless nights after the baby is born because the infant needs to be fed round-the-clock. As it is, I already have to get up a few times in the middle of the night to pee. And sometimes I get hungry and have to eat when I'd rather sleep (thank goodness for jello and pudding cups). When the baby is out, sure I'll have to get up in the middle of the night to feed him. But at least the rest of my sleep will be comfortable because my belly won't be in the way and I won't be punched/kicked anymore. Which is why I can't wait for this baby to come out!
Ok that is all for now :)
