During this second half of the semester, my nursing program will be focusing on nursing aspects as it pertains to Pregnancy and Newborns. I'm quite excited because I'm pretty much learning about me and my current situation. Not only am I learning as much as I can about pregnancy and babies, I'm also getting credit for it at the same time! :)
This past week has been rather hectic, with lots (and I mean lots) of reading. We barely started with this content on Monday and our first exam is already next Wed (covering the first 389 pages of our maternity/newborn text). We're going to be on the floor in the Maternity Ward of various hospitals, taking care of mothers and their newborns, in 10 days. And we need to be ready for it.
In the meantime, we've practiced starting IV's on each other (on the back of the hand, even). My hand still hurts from the stab 3 days ago (there's still a slight bruise on it right now), and I'm sure my classmates' hands are hurting just as much. But at least when our patients ask, "Is this your first time?" we can honestly say that we've done this before. Although, if they ask, "Have you ever done this correctly?"... well, that's different.
If I haven't been writing as much, it's because during the first half of the semester, I started slipping with my grades. When I took the final exam a week ago, I was only sure on my answers to half of the questions. That's not a very comfortable margin of error for me or, more importantly, for my patients. With my reasoning skills, I managed to get a B on the final. But knowing what to do only 82% of the time is unsettling.
But at least I'm pretty sure it's because I haven't finished all of the reading, so some of the questions looked totally alien to me. I think if I've done all the required reading, I would have done much better. Which is why I've been spending more and more time with my texts. And less frolicking on the 'net.
PS: My spring break is April 6-10.
