That darn cat...

It's been an event-filled weekend thus far. Right now I'm revelling in having my very own pint-sized 'puter and it's an absolute treat that I can carry it with me wherever I go. Working on such a small keyboard is surprisingly comfortable even though the screen is so very small.

Currently I'm proofing a galley of the surprise... Which I still can't confirm because the contract is (it can be hoped) somewhere between Cape Town and New York. And that's as much as I'll say right now.

We had a petite drama these past two days. When Thomas and I returned home yesterday, we noticed that our little Kali cat wasn't home. I eventually grew suspicious when she didn't turn up for dinner, and she NEVER misses mealtimes. We called and called but heard nothing. Thing is, cats always come to a sticky end, one way or another.

We had guests over and things didn't feel right without Kali, whose brooding presence so delights and horrifies people by equal measure. She really does live up to her name because if you pet her too much she suddenly takes a swipe and often draws blood.

This morning, still no Kali. I decided to whistle for her (she seems to find humans who whistle irresistable) then I heard it: a faint hysterical miauwwing from the house above us. We pinpointed her location. She'd been locked in the garage.

When we got the neighbour to unlock, she shot out, obviously horribly relieved to not be in the dark, confined space. It's a horrible feeling when an animal goes missing. If there's no body, there's no closure... Like with our Azrael who we suspect got caught in a snare in the vlei near our old house. Back then we were living next to a township, and the locals delighted in setting snares to catch buck and porcupines.

So, our little family is reunited, and life goes on.

On another note, I found a river boatman in my house a week or so ago. The cats must have brought it in and on a whim I decided to release it into the goldfish bowl... Well, the critter took care of all the plants then started on the fish, whose fins were quite ragged when I made the discovery  that the bug wasn't vegetarian as the internet had me believing. The fish is fine. I've released the boatman into the vlei down the road. Life in the Treehaus continues.
