So, I may have started re-watching Gossip Girl from the start. waltzmatildah, I'm pretty sure I have you to thank/blame for this.
It's weird watching from the beginning and knowing how it's going to end. It's also very strange to find that I'm reacting to most of the characters in just the same way I did the first time around.
I didn't like Serena, Lily, Rufus, Blair or Dan to start with, and although Blair grew on me fast, I think it was season 2 or 3 before I started to get a handle on Serena and Lily. Rufus, well, I pretty much wanted to throttle him with his annoying leather thong necklace thing right from the start, and I felt much the same way when the show ended, although he did become less annoying for a few isolated episodes somewhere in the middle.
Dan, though. I could have loved that character, I really could have. Except he was such a total tool, and never seemed to become aware of that fact. I have no problem with characters who are tools (as evidence, please see my deep and abiding love for Chuck Bass), but I have problems when tools are textually presented as Nice Guys. It's the same problem I have with Phil Coulson, I suppose. (And, obviously, the ultimate NiceGuyTool: Dawson Leery.)
And Chuck. Yeah. I watched the pilot again and was all hand-wavey about the pilot weirdness. Then I hit S01E02 and was hit by that same stupid surge of adoration for his character when he wakes up in his stripey silk jammies, with his black eye, and a member of room service staff on either side of him.
In other news, I still haven't read any fic. I'm saving it for a treat, or something, I don't know. Possibly I'm subconsciously intimidated, and don't want to read it until I've finished the two things I'm working on right now.
And after those, perhaps this will be the year I finally write the epic Chuck Bass fics of enormousness that live in my head. And that no one else will want to read. But I think fondly of the space that will be cleared out if ever I get rid of them.
