December 19

Five favourite movies, day 1.

His Girl Friday

This always gets mentioned first when people ask me for my favourite films, because it's been one of my favourites since I was a little girl. I was, rather unusually now that I think about it, obsessed by Cary Grant from the age of about 7 until, well, it hasn't really worn off. I remember being off school with tonsillitis or something, and watching this, and being spellbound. I mean, obivously, I didn't get most of the jokes, and (I hope) none of the doubles entendres, but the dialogue moves along at a cracking pace, there's enough slapstick humour to keep a kid amused, and if you haven't seen it YOU SHOULD FIX THAT RIGHT NOW.

Watching it as an adult, I can spot the datedness of some of the plot and dialogue, but with that in mind, how fantastic is it that Rosalind Russell gets to play a woman who is spectacularly awesome at her job, when all the other people doing that job (less well) are men, in a film made in 1940? And she **SPOILER ALERT** stays not just because she loves her manipulative arse of an ex (me? A type? I have no idea what you mean) but because she really and truly loves that job. It's actually an adaptation of a play where Hildy was a man. Yeah, that probably sucked.

Also, Rosalind Russell has the greatest hat in the history of ever. See above picture for evidence.
