Tearing down historic buildings

A big controversy here on the main line is that some folks bought a historic and absolutely gorgeous house in Bryn Mawr...and plan to tear it down.
Apparently, these buyers want to build a new house on the property. Recently, the new owners rejected a wealthy Florida man's offer to buy the house (not the land), and relocate the house itself onto nearby property that he bought.

I realize that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I just can't relate to somebody's desire to tear down such a work of art. What motivates such a person? There are other properties in the area on which the uber-wealthy can build their dream house, but perhaps not with the Bryn Mawr name.
