05/27 Jenny rambles about poetry... again!

May 27, 2009 21:53

Firstly, before I forget, I decided to get my hair cut in the end, since I prefer having short hair in the summer and my hair grows quite quickly if I decide I don't like it! I'll probably dailybooth/twitter tomorrow when I've got it cut.

Now I shall proceed to ramble about the appointment of the next Poet Laureate for the UK. I don't know how much you know about this, so sorry if it's boring.

The Poet Laureate is a position appointed by the monarch which is advised by the prime minister and their role is to write poetry about State events (things like weddings and important events). The first Laureate was appointed 400 years ago, and since then there have been some very good Laureates and some rather bad ones.

I have mixed views on the post of Poet Laureate, since I don't really want to read about State events and there are other awards that celebrate poetry. However, the fact that a new Poet Laureate has been appointed means that poetry is being talked about, which is really good. For example, the BBC is running a "Poetry Season" which has loads of interesting programmes about poetry.

The new Poet Laureate chosen was Carol Ann Duffy, a choice I fully support. I studied some of her poems for GCSE, and really enjoyed them, they're very powerful and quite easy to understand and dissect. The other reason I'm quite enthusiastic about the choice, is because she is openly gay/bisexual; this was one of the reasons she wasn't offered the post ten years ago, so showing the UK is making progress.

Exams wise I only have four left, Henry VII on Tuesday, Latin Language and Literature on Wednesday (a terrifying thought that the grade for a years work is being decided on three hours of exams!) and then Henri IV of France the next Monday. So by next week the hardest three will be over.

Comment Questions:
(Thankfully, I think I've asked all questions I can think of about poetry!)

1. Favourite lyric at the moment? (I've become obsessed with The Dresden Dolls and so music is on my mind.)
2. a) Do you have any tips for learning facts/theories for subjects like History?
b) How do you get motivated to study?
3. Do you like sushi? My mum bought some vegetarian stuff for tea, which was lovely!

Also, I just remembered (yes, I've been writing this post for ages and only just remembered!) can my title be Official Poetry Nerd? *smiles sweetly*
