This post comes in two parts, family visits and last.fm!
My family are coming to visit me on Sunday, which is going to be really strange. I won't have seen them for a month, which is twice as long as the previous time I've gone without seeing them. I wasn't planning on coming home at all during term time, just because it's only 12 weeks and it's expensive and time consuming getting home, but everyone else in my flat lives relatively close to home, so they've all gone home at least once, so I'm planning to go home at the end of week 7. This week though, everyone except one of my flatmates who lives quite close anyway, is going home, and it's my brother's half term holiday, so my family offered to drive here so I wouldn't be on my own all weekend. I'm actually looking forward to it, although they won't meet any of my flatmates, or like anyone else I know, which is one of the main reasons I love it here. However, I'm going to show them around campus and around Norwich, which should be fun! The other thing is my family meeting my flatmates would be really strange, since we were just chatting in the kitchen for about an hour, and barely a five minutes passed without some kind of innuendo or rude joke, so it's probably a good thing they're not going to be meeting.
I was talking about this on twitter, but I find last.fm really strange. It goes a long with the post Jez made earlier this year about browsing someone's itunes and finding things out about them. However, I think the way last.fm is arranged, with the ability to read back through the recent played songs, is offputting. I feel like because it has the time when each song was played, you can read back through someone's history like a diary. For example, the songs I usually listen to usually have some emotional connection to how I'm feeling, so in theory someone could go back through my history and read how I'm feeling at a particular point. You can also get some idea of people's daily routines as well, since I normally play different music when I'm getting up to when I'm getting ready to go out or doing work, so it's strange in that way too. Although, at the moment, System of a Down's album "Mezmerise" counts for all three instances, it's loud enough to wake me up in the morning, fast tempo enough to listen to before I go out (and also two of my flatmates love the album), and I don't know it well enough that I can tune it out while working. So maybe it isn't as specific as I thought, or I just come off as a massive System of a Down fan!
