I'm in my pajamas, sipping wine on a second floor balcony overlooking the gulf. The gentle waves are lapping on the beach a few feet in front of me, and a cool breeze is making the palm fronds rustle. There are 2 lights blinking lazily to my right, one red and one green, signaling a channel for boats to pass through. The full moon is beaming down on everything from a cloudless star-flecked sky, so that the water is shimmering silver all the way out to the horizon. The lights of boats are visible off in the distance, and I can't help but wonder how many stars they see, and what led them to their particular latitudes.
It's amazing to think of how any of us end up where we're sitting just now. Lots of little steps, maybe some big risks, and a bunch of sheer coincidences I'm sure.
I do know that I wouldn't be sitting here, bathed in moonlight, watching the silhouettes of pelicans dipping into the water, if my parents hadn't have taken a bunch of big risks. You'd think their example would make me fearless, but somehow all this time I've managed to feel safe and secure. My parents big risks were not my decisions, they were just things that happened to me. They were on this quest for something better, and I was merely along for the ride. Oblivion is bliss, but now I admire their courage.
I could be anywhere right now, but somehow this is where I chose to be; coddled in safe arms.
Where is my courage and ambition? What's the point of being adaptable if you're too afraid to go it on your own, to make a bold choice, or be... something?
Moreover, how do you know what that something is, or if a choice is right if you're always being directed somewhere by someone else?
I just want to know who I am. Not who I'm supposed to be.
I also want Luke to be here... I think he'd appreciate the dark water in the same way I do. It's all so beautiful and disconcerting at the same time.
