flash mobs were actually (or so he claims) started by someone to
poke fun at hipster conformity and the psychology of hype. did not know!
i get the insidery appeal of them, and this may be naive of me, but isn't there also an element of fun & the absurd? or are we all past that now?
in other hipster gathing news, we went to the swoon armada reception last night in L.I.C. queens at deietch projects. her show was really stunning and vast. i love how she does all these different things (cutouts, wheatpasted figured, sculpture, soft sculpture, junk arranging) and was able to create this entire world in this huge hangar like area. there was a lot to absorb.
and then of course, were the ships themselves. as we were pressed toward the dock to try and get a glimpse of them coming in at twilight against the shimmering skylight of new york city, a very petite woman clambered over the railing and began to throw sunflowers at the folks on the boats, who were all dressed up in formal hipster finery. the sunflower hurler was swoon! (j is the most excellent artist stalker there is.) the hungry marching band played rollicking music and people danced and bopped and hooted. i've never seen more bikes outside of critical mass locked up all along the fences.
i love how this particular art event was about creating community for her, and she was able to do that in such an organic way. everyone was just having a blast. reminder:
next weekend are the performances. as public art goes, these boats are way better than the gates and those stupid waterfalls.
