Search Party of Doom.

The weirdest thing about the day so far was probably that, for Veronica Mars, waking up to the find the world shaking and sliding beneath her was almost comforting. It wasn't like it was a good thing; it was just that it felt like the kind of thing that would have happened in Neptune, and for those first few drowsy moments while she scrambled to ( Read more... )

No more walking. My feet were blistering and aching like a bitch, and I'd slept like shit last night. Not to mention I was pretty certain we were walking around in circles. Sure, all trees look alike... but not that much alike.

"Fucking ridiculous," I grumbled, grabbing a handful of my tank top to air out the fabric. I was sweaty and my sunburns were probably sunburned and I kept swatting at the same damn mosquitos. "It's not that big of an island, we should be back by now and I swear to God, if I hear any more dinorawring I'm going to... well I'm going to do something.

She's taken to making one giant knot in her hair that is hanging fucking everywhere and dirty as shit and not in the good way. She stops, hands resting on her waist, and hoping that she doesn't smell too gross.

"What? Kill one?" Now that she'd pay to see. Not too much, but it'd keep things interesting. "Cause suicide isn't painless. MASH lied."

We've been walking for fucking ever, seems like. The sun's high and is already starting to make it's drop for the day. A little ways back, I saw the towers for the fences, which means any second now we might get torn to fucking pieces by a goddamn velociraptor or whatever the fuck. The jungle even sounds different this far out, and I figure, at least if I'm gonna get ripped to shreds, I might see something really fucking cool just beforehand.

I'm about ready to just stand here yelling out names and wait for 'em to come to us. But I figure that's a pretty fucking dumbass idea. "You know, I'm gonna be really fucking pissed off when we get back to the compound and they're already there," I snort, pulling a bottle of water out of my bag to take a sip and then holding it out toward Veronica.

It was, whether or not Neil knew it, worth noting that Veronica no longer hesitated before accepting the bottle and taking a sip herself. "That's the point when we kill 'em ourselves," she agreed, smiling grimly. It was times like this she could be grateful Arya had worked her so hard and kept her in shape. She was tired after their hike, but it could have been much worse. She was telling herself that anyway, though her feet weren't too sure on that score. Her quips had grown fewer and more tight-lipped as the miles went on, mainly because, much as antagonizing Roxy might even have been fun in other circumstances, it was probably increasingly suicidal in this one.

Hear with your eyes, see with your eyes. It sounded simple, but Arya had a point, and Veronica was paying close attention to their surroundings.

"Fuck, I'll donate a bullet to the cause," I mutter, swatting at yet another fucking flying insect that buzzes by my head. They've been getting worse since the sun came out, and I almost want a dino to pop out of nowhere and put me out of my misery.

"I don't know about that other chick, but this is George we're talking about. She couldn't do the smart thing if it bit her on the ass and tap danced on her head."

"It's painless if you do it right," I muttered, and it took me a while to realize that I was the only one still walking. Hello, unannounced rest break, but hey, it was just fine with me.

Except for the part where it was probably more than fine with the dinosaurs. "Shit. Are you sure we're heading west?" No, I wasn't nearly out of breath. Shut up. Canting a hip to the side, I visored a hand over my eyes and blinked into the distance. "Wait. Is that...?"

More staring and blinking, now accompanied by pointing at this heat-hazy tower peaking out over the tops of the trees. "Please tell me I'm not just seeing things because I'm dying from exposure...?"

Wendy's got to admit, that the girl has a point on that one. It really all depends on the strategy. Oddly enough, but doesn't change the fact that the girl is a fucking loon for still wandering around.

"We have to be, the sun's fucking that way." She points to where it was and takes a wild guess based on how long they've been awake. No fucking nature guide, but still. It's something. "If you're dying then I'm dying cuase I fucking see it too," she mutters, nearly compliant for once.

Slowing down, I squint up at the watchtower just to my left, sticking up through the trees, the first building or anything we've seen in hours. Roxy's... well, she's sorta right, but I don't say anything 'cause I'd be a fucking liar to say I'm any different.

"You think anybody's up there?"

"Might be," Veronica said, frowning a little. "Either way, we can get up there, might be able to see something that'll point us to them. The trees might be too thick, though." Either way, she thought it might be worth a try. "Still better than wandering blind."

"Nobody's supposed to be up there," I say, glancing up at the tower. "Unless it's somebody who found it after getting out of dino territory and didn't want to hike home blindly." Which would really be a smart thing, depending on who you are. Which means George and/or Mason sure as fuck aren't up there.

Wordlessly, I dump the shit I've been carrying -- just the flashlight and my jacket -- and find the ladder that leads up. "Let's see what we can see," I mutter to myself and start climbing.

"Looks like the fucking Hilton to me." Complete with a goddamn penthouse suite and all. Sheer sweet relief took over the job of getting me moving then, and it was a good thing too because all my adrenaline had run out. Without another word I started forward...

... and nearly jumped out of my freaking skin when this tiny little dinosaur scuttled into few, twitched its head in the general direction of my knee, and then blinked up at me with these wide, faux-innocent eyes. It looked like a chicken with a combination of gangrene and eczema.

Right. Watch out for the small ones. I huffed a disgusted sound, tossed the girl a disgruntled look, and just, well, I kicked it. In the face. With my bare foot.

The sun had gotten to me, I swear. "Ow, motherfucking...scales...fucking... go away!" I yelled, hopping a little, and then made to kick at it again but it scuttled off before I could get in a second suicidal shot ( ... )
