I guess the best way to think of it is that we aren't people. Er, I don't know where it is where you're from, but in Europe, there's been an idea of "national personifications" for many years now. You hear about 'Mother Russia,' or Marianne for France… that's not a hard idea to understand, right? The idea of someone as the representation of a country's spirit?
