Sinterklaas was really nice-- everyone wrote poems and made gedichten (even me!), ate lots of candy, drank mulled wine, and sang horrible songs. Some of the gedichten were a bit mean-spirited, I thought, but everyone seemed to take it in stride. I'll describe it all in more detail later, but I don't really have time at the moment...
Been spending every free moment searching for a decent price on a ticket back to the US to see my family in January. Most of the sites I used for tickets to the Netherlands require a point of origin in the US, so I couldn't use them this time around. Finally found a reasonable ticket on Travelocity, thank god-- I have spent literally hours upon hours searching for tickets online and was getting really grumpy. Now it's settled-- I'm going back from the 7th of January to the 28th. Tex-Mex, here I come...
Stopped by the building site of our new house today, and just happened to bump into our future next-door neighbors. They seem quite nice, and interestingly the wife's mother is from England-- as soon as she heard that I was an American, she exclaimed how lovely it was to meet a fellow English-speaker... guess she doesn't get out much. :-P Rick and I paced all over the outlines of the foundation (which is all that is there at the moment) and figured out where everything will be-- it felt sort of strange to be standing in my future living room! We buried a coin in the center of the house, took some pictures, and just enjoyed that heady feeling that comes with buying your first house. :)
And now I need to go to sleep, since both Rick and I need to wake up early tomorrow. We're going to Bonn for a week for the European Maya Conference, which has got me so excited I can barely see straight. :) Gotta go throw some clothes in the dryer and then get to bed so that we don't oversleep and miss our train tomorrow....
