I am home alone for the first time in months. It’s a nice feeling. I could pick my nose if I wanted to and there would be no one around to say ewww! At the moment, I am unshowered, wearing yesterday’s makeup, and still in my PJs. It feels so nice.
On occasion, I’ll catch a whiff of a scent, hear a certain sound or have the sunlight hit my face at just the right angle and it’ll remind me of a different time. On those occasions, I hold still and bask in it for as long as I can hold the memory.
I’m having one of those moments right now.
The memory I’m holding onto seems like it happened a long time ago. In fact, it’s only been a few years. However, so much has changed that it might as well have been centuries ago. Back then, I was still living in my Mom’s house, my parents were still split up, I had graduated high school and didn’t have a job. That doesn’t sound like a good time, but it was.
I would stay awake late into the night while Mom and Lisa were asleep. The only sound was the gentle hum of my computer and the occasional click of the mouse. I would sit for hours reading Harry Potter fanfic. Back then, my biggest concern was whether Maya had updated Underwater Light or not.
So I sit here now, in my PJs at 4 O’clock in the morning, rereading fanfic favorites and listening to the gentle hum of my computer. And it feels good.
