I would like to rant a little about bureaucracy.
I am applying to this one fellowship, which shall remain unnamed, that I wish to share with you.
First, they require THREE essays, each ten pages, including an AUTOBIOGRAPHY. I've never written an autobiography before--the experience is surreal (I am struggling to keep in the interesting things while still making my life politically correct). PLUS, I also have to write four BRIEF STATEMENTS concerning my desire for the fellowship. I also have to send in a bunch of forms, three refs, a transcript, a writing sample, and a HEAD SHOT. Alex and I are going to take the head shot photos today (there is no way that I am spending money for someone else to take pictures of me for a simple fellowship. It's not like this is an acting gig!).
The other bit of bureaucracy concerns my marriage. In order for our marriage to be recognized in France, we have to send in all these silly forms. So far, the most silly is the form to try to get a certified copy of my birth certificate. Apparently, in order to send forms to other governments, the forms need to be certified by the county AND the Secretary of the State in which they were issued. And it costs a lot of money. The first time that we tried to do it, it cost $42 just to obtain the certified birth certificate. Now, Alex and it are doing it a different way, at a current cost of $25 (and it will only get more expensive). It is times like these that I think Socialism has the edge on American Democracy. It certainly feels like the privileged rich get an easier time of it.
Bureaucracy aside, there are many goods things in America. Like bacon, muffin tins, and Monterey Jack cheese.
