2nd Dusting

[Action]

[All told, Melaka's feeling pretty good. Sure, Harth had bit someone, but he survived and she gave him a nice nasty burn. It gives her a grim sort of satisfaction. Enough of one that despite being in a "new world" and one she still isn't that familiar with she's open to going out for a bit of fun today during the daylight hours. If ( Read more... )

[It's when Giles is coming down from the second floor of Seventh Heaven, looking over the layout of Cloud Nine, that he spots Melaka just inside the doorway.

...he's finally feeling well enough, sufficiently recovered from his recent kidnapping, to even consider other events of that night. Chiefly her, her brother, and what they mean.

This is lucky. He walks the rest of the way down the steps before actually addressing her.]

Hello.

[Oh.

...That's the guy Harth got. Awkward. But-]

Hey.

[Who, this guy? Nah, this guy is totally not awkward. He is, however, upright and alert, which is probably an improvement.]

Settling in all right?

Still working on it, but getting there.

Everyone does, in the end. Sad as that is to say.

Any more questions you need answered?

[She actually hesitates a moment... and then waves for him to come sit with her somewhere - like this bench. It's still weird to be out in the sun, but she's trying to get used to it.]

Let's do our sun check.

Yes, I'd just meant to ask you if that was still the applicable terminology. Now that the sun is actually up.

[He follows her to the bench, taking a seat after she does.] "Sun check..."

[She chuckles - it's not that amused, but more to just fill space and she figures she should] In Haddyn, if the sun's too bright it means it's dangerous. Bright days mean cancelled ball games.

Oh. Like, um, "rain check." Leads to the same results, although rain is...hardly dangerous.

[Fill space. It's a familiar sort of habit.]

...how odd.

Worst you get some rain's little acid. Sun makes radies.

[She says this matter of factly. Her over-dose of sunscreen might stand out to compliment her saying this]

[...okay, that does it. Pulling out a notebook and a pencil.]

"Radies"?

[...Is he actually taking notes? An honest snicker]

Radies - people mutated by the UVs the sun gives off.

[Yes, he is. "Radies" is first on the page, followed by "sun check". "Rutting" and "ock", he's fairly certain he can guess.

Without looking up, he scribbles Melaka's definition.]

...s-sorry, mutated? When on Earth did that start happening?

Dunno, maybe a cen ago? Fig since you guys are surprised, less than two.

[A beat]

...Cen means a hundred years.

Century.

[It's an automatic sort of correction as he adds in the last name.]

...that wasn't supposed to happen. Of all the things that could have gone wrong, mutation by sunlight wasn't supposed to be one of them. That seems, um, almost a mystical effect.

Doubt it. I'm the first Slayer in two cen - take what Dairies say, that means a lack of evil, right?
