Where We Stand

Peak Oil is a phrase which describes the conditions in which oil production in existing oil fields declines as resources decline simultaneously when oil demand accelerates due to economic growth.

Cheney's own task force has said that in the next few years oil production will decline at a steady rate of 3% while oil demand will grow at a rate of 2%. Thus, by 2020 we will be producing as much oil as 1980 with the problem of fueling the new powers of India and China, not to mention ourselves . . .

Imagine that Britain's own Defense minister has said that "the era of resource wars is upon us." Now, one might say, "no shit--see Iraq 1991, 2003." But the fact is that the Defense minister was not merely talking about the obvious, but about wars over water and food all in the context of the peak oil crisis described above.

Imagine what will happen in these circumstances and think about where you will be in fifteen years. Even now the US has murdered 200,000-300,000 people in Iraq and has threatened nuclear war. Imagine what scarcity will mean in this country: who do the privileged elite always blame? Not their own insane logic of empire and domination, but blacks, Latinos, gays, or anybody else not like them.

Imagine what will happen if we do not act. Let the image sink in: Halliburton has already received millions for "immigrant detention" facilities in case of "an immigrantion emergency." What exactly would that constitute?

Imagine a law like HR4437 actually being enforced and 12 million immigrant being rounded up by a draft army of millions. Think who all would be imprisoned in this "immigration emergency" under a law that would put anybody in prison who "aides" immigrants. Where will it stop?

That is only one possible scenario, there are many things that can be done. But if we do not DO SOMETHING, if we DO NOT ACT, we will watch our world crumble before our eyes. This isn't a matter of being interested or not in politics, it is a matter of our survival.
