Did anyone read Ten Kids, No Pets as a child? It's sort of Brady Bunch meets Faulkner (rural setting, different narrators and voices), and it was one of my favorite books in elementary school.
The plot is--unsurprisingly--that this family has so many kids, their parents wont let them have a pet. They scheme through the entire story to change their parents' minds, to hilarious results.
Last night I had a random, short dream involving the book. In this dream, the ending turned out to be that the mother died and was reincarnated as a cat that the kids went on to adopt. I think this was my brain trying to add another Faulknerian layer to the tale. It would also be a pretty haunting and sad end to a children's story.
