The Killers Light Up The Lakefront

Yeah, you don't have to tell me. I've been a horrible LJ friend. I know. But honestly, not posting at all is better than whining all the fucking time, right? Right. Anywho, for The Killers' fans on my f-list, here's my long anticipated review of my concert from way back when.......September 6th!

This is my first attempt at a legit review, so please tear this apart and tell me what I did wrong.

Las Vegas has given the world everything associated with sin and excessive pleasure, but their best contribution is mostly definitely glam-rock band The Killers. Fronted by eccentric lead singer Brandon Flowers, bass guitarist and guitarist Mark Stoerming and Dave Keuning respectively pulled together alongside drummer Ronnie Vannucci to make Sunday September 6th a very, very memorable night.

For some, the day started at the crack of dawn, but the line grew longer by the minute after mid day. The hours leading up to the show were spent forging new friendships, admiring various Killers memorabilia, and chatting of their past shows. But it was when security relocate the line that the pre-show adrenaline peaked.

Security was tight and announced a very firm “no running” rule before the gates opened. For anyone who had been standing the better part of the day, this procedure was a God-send. The general admission folk filtered in at lightning speed to secure the best spot possible. The seated areas took longer to fill, but it only took half an hour for the venue to fill to capacity.

Wolfmother commenced the evening with a brief but energetic set. If anything negative could be spoken about them, it would be regarding the way the band spread themselves out on the stage. The right side of the pit were given a great show seeing as they clustered together on that side, but the sympathetic front man made sure to stroll to the left side of the stage throughout their show. Lead singer and guitarist Andrew Stockdale kept the audience bopping their heads regardless with his strong vocals and intricate guitar playing. Keyboard and bass player Chris Ross proved to be the most entertaining member of the band. His odd but entertaining stage antics, dancing and leaping onto his keyboard included, added a small air of comedy to the environment. Drummer Myles Heskett kept the beat tight and worked well. The band even played through a minor technical difficulty.

The second they left the stage, the tech crew began setting up for the main event; The Killers. Each minute felt like an hour, but it was apparent that the crew was working as hard and as fast as possible.

There’s a moment when the lights dim and everyone goes silent. Hearts stop beating only to resume their rhythm as one giant soul when the lights explode back on. The second The Killers’ vintage circus music pounds through the speakers, the entire audience is screaming and on their feet. Dave struts on stage in a three piece suit, minus a shirt, Brandon is wearing a black feathered and sequined number, and Ronnie and Mark look like two guys fresh off the sidewalk.

They launched straight into Human and the entire venue was belting the song out alongside Brandon Flowers’ powerful voice. The band is on key and there’s magic in the air. They jump right into Spaceman next, a small guitar extension in the middle taking the hit to another level.

The distinct drum beat of Neon Tiger maintains the energy they have going. For Reasons Unknown is the next tune they play and it’s complete with a romantic story from the swoon-evoking frontman. The song is followed by Bones and The World We Live in, both holding up very well live.

Brandon leaves the front of the stage and gets comfortable behind his piano for a gorgeous reprise of Spaceman. Just vocals and piano; although the reprise was short, it was a definite high light. They segue right into Bling (Confessions of a King) and the energy is unbelievably high. Brandon slows it down with another story, but this is a picturesque piece that summons nostalgia for memories we have or haven’t had.

Shadowplay, their signature Joy Division cover, is followed by their live staple Somebody Told Me. Wolfmother frontman Andrew and bass player Chris join The Killers on stage for a cover of The Animals’ track Don’t Let Be Misunderstood.

An acoustic version of Smile Like You Mean It brings the energy down slightly, but the excitement is restored when Dave switches from his acoustic to electric guitar. Change Your Mind, a mostly unknown gem off Hot Fuss, is followed by A Dustland Fairytale, Read My Mind, and the infamous Mr. Brightside. Another story is told by the front man, his awkward sense of humor shining through as he recounts the formation of the band. Their pop anthem All These Things That I’ve Done, complete with a wonderful confetti explosion and fire works, signals the closeness of the end of the show.

Their break between the first half and the encore is fortunately very brief and they retake the stage before the audience stops their thunderous applause. This Is Your Life, a Day and Age track, starts the encore on a definite high note. Jenny Was A Friend of Mine is followed by When You Were Young. With a final dimming of the lights, The Killers say good night and thank the crowd before darting off stage.

The show was flawless in every sense of the word. Brandon Flowers seems to have perfected the ultimate glam rock stage persona and Dave, Ronnie, and Mark are easily some of the most talented musicians of this generation. Their live performance was never short on passion and intensity; each song was filled with a refreshing and immensely satisfying eagerness that one hopes they will never, ever lose. The light show is also something else. That, in addition to their stage set up (complete with plastic palm trees, neon lights, and a mirrored piano) is a sure thing to land them a fine place is music history.
