bar reviews

I am about to go to one, so why not?

The Junction, Plenty Road, Preston.

Tom and I took our mothers there recently on separate occasions. It's "family friendly" which seems to mean putting a climbing frame around the corner from a battalion of poker machines, so you can parent whilst you gamble. Basically, we hate this sort of joint, with it's uniformed bar staff, top forty radio competing with sports tv, and lighting bright enough to take out someone's tonsils by, but it is literally right down the road, the food is the type of fare you can feed to unadventuruous relatives aged 6-77, and sometimes a place like that is useful. But overall the level of brutal hygiene and sharp visibility displayed at The Junction sits poorly with my preferred drinking habits.

The Raccoon Club, Plenty Rd Preston. Now this more like it. The "no dickheads" policy is brutally spelled out by the door, it's quite dark and the French fries are excessively, wonderfully salty. There's a bit of obligatory taxidermied decor, which seems compulsory now for hipster hangouts, but I don't feel old when I go there, and the wine is served in sturdy, chubby tumblers, which reminds me of the way I drink it at home, minus the Law and Order marathons I like with my wine.

Sweetwater Inn, somewhere in South Yarra. Impressive rustic decor-sort of Wild West meets deserted cattle station. The food is interesting, and very vegan friendly, much to my surprise. I just need to go back sometime other than a Friday in December so I can hear myself think. Eventually we went back to Nick's flat for further drinkies, which is not a bar so I won't give out the address. You can sit on the floor there, which would be a bad idea at most any bars, but if the Sweetwater is crowded it is nice to have a Nick's Flat handy. Thanks Nick!
