I had to reread every single paragraph at least three times. Not because they were confusing, but because your imagery was so completely gorgeous it took more than one reading to fully appreciate just how much you put into a handful of words. I kept trying to find a specific example I could quote back at you, but it was so subtly and wonderfully done the whole thing just came around with this tone I can't even describe. Gorgeous.
Such an interesting approach to the characters, too; Watson pining after Holmes, rather than the latter being begrudging towards his marriage. It's the most convincing portrayal of them I think I've read, and Mary was absolutely wonderful in her ~manipulative ways.
Ending it in such a soft and hopeful way as well - so perfect. ♥ and written for little old me, too, I don't deserve your awesomeness. ♥
Oh, your writing is sublime! *throws away own pens/quills/keyboards* Magnificent. And subdued and subtle. Each word *pulling* the reader towards that inevitable outcome.
Love the mud forming the geological strata on the boots, the unread diary. And the alleys looking into Watson. Gosh, this is so so good.
