Growing up I was a huge fan of the Warrior cat series by Erin Hunter, a group of four women who write together under one name. I devoured these books, always searching for more and more and reading straight through them as I did. Far too quickly, the original Warriors series ended, and though more books were written focusing on the same world, the cat world,I was never able to find any of them. I had thought that Erin Hunter was done writing.
Imagine my surprise when I walked into my town library only to see a brand new Erin Hunter book sitting on the shelf! I had seen it before, but had never had enough confidence in a book about bears to pay the full price. As it was in the library, and had Erin Hunter's name on it, I picked it up and started it immediately, and was pleasantly surprised to find that it was both enticing and enjoyable. I immediately fell into the mindset of the three bears; Kallik the female polar bear, Toklo the fierce grizzly, and Lusa the tame black bear.
I think that Erin Hunter looks into the minds and instincts of their characters and give them the most amazing perspective. It took no time for the action to start, and though I felt that the story got a bit strange after a while, it was as realistic as it possibly could be.
I loved how the book subtly hinted at the environmental issues currently happening in North America, like the salmon changing their courses as the oceans are heating up, and how the ice in the Arctic are melting, forcing polar bears to head for land much sooner than they normally would. These are scary realities not only for bears both real and fictional, but also for us, and I loved that the Erin Hunter authors were able to express this without getting 'in your face' about it.
I was hooked from the first page that I read, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone, whether they are into animal books or not. (I'm not, either, but I love Erin Hunter.)
