To Read:

Upon entering the apartment he now shared with his new wife, William immediately recognized a rather unpleasant interruption in his comfortable daily routine. Usually, Grelle would come bounding down the front hall to greet him with a peck on the cheek and questions about his day at work. (Obviously a formality, seeing as she only left headquarters an hour and a half earlier than he did, meaning there was rarely - if ever - anything for him to relate that she hadn't already witnessed for herself.)

But today, nothing. No welcoming kisses, no dinner simmering away on the stove. There weren't even any lights switched on. Had she not gone home after work?

However, he then noticed a faint light in the hallway, coming from the direction of their bedroom. As he padded into their shared quarters, he found the origin of the light, seeping in from underneath their bathroom door.

"Grelle?" he called out, still feeling a bit self-conscious to no longer address her by her surname, which, he reminded himself, was now the same as his own.

"Ah, welcome home..." she responded, somewhat absently, from behind the closed door. Distant, as though she were focused on something else entirely.

That was strange. He decided to open the door himself - and couldn't suppress his gasp of shock upon witnessing his wife's current state. There she stood before the sink, scissors in hand, long rivulets of red making their way into the drain below.

"Wh-what have you done to yourself?" he finally managed, after a brief moment of panicked spluttering. He'd always known she was impulsive, but this... This was extreme, even for her. Was she acting out due to unhappiness? Was she unhappy, being married to him? Why would she--

"Oh, Will..." she complained, a childish pout forming on her lips, "you weren't supposed to see until I'd finished!"

Oops. Time to backpedal.

"Well, I mean, it's very nice, but... Grelle, that was nearly three feet of hair!"

She paused in her snipping, seemingly satisfied with the results.

"It was getting cumbersome," she replied simply. "It used to make me feel so womanly, back when I..." a faraway look appeared in her eyes, "back when I needed to." The moment passed and she shook her head, as though clearing it of excess thoughts, before returning her gaze to her husband's face and smiling warmly. "But I have no more use for it. Besides! Don't you think it looks just darling now?"

She spun around, her new chin-length hair swishing back and forth against porcelain skin. Simply beautiful.

"Yes," he replied tentatively, "I...quite like it, now that I've been given a chance to adjust." His eyes softened and the barest hint of a smile appeared at the corners of his mouth. "How would you like to show it off at dinner tonight? My treat."

Grelle clapped her hands together gleefully, taking hold of his shoulders and giving him a brief hug before dashing off to find an outfit suitable for a night out on the town.

After she left, William bent slightly to retrieve a newly-shorn lock of red hair from its resting place on the tile floor. He brought the perfumed strands to his lips, bidding a silent farewell to one chapter in their lives - and welcoming the next with the greatest of expectations.
