Basically, Haruhi doesn't want summer vacation to end. So she unconsciously wills time to repeat itself over and over again, erasing everyone's memories each time it resets. An endless recursion of time.
Meanwhile, the other brigade members get this massive sense of déja vu and figure out what's going on, but can't do anything to stop it. Lather, rinse, repeat. Six times, so far.
It's been essentially the same episode over and over again. Which illustrates the point well, but it's gotten to the point where we're like: "OMG YOU GUYS FIGURE OUT A WAY TO END THIS FRIGGIN' LOOP~"

The same events happen without much of a change, but the animation and dialogue is different each time.
So basically, no progress is being made... But the non-progress takes a different form every episode.
If that makes any sense.
