Sure, I play a lot of video games. I just got
.Hack//Infection and
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time in the mail from
GameFly yesterday. I played them both, then tried all night to log into
Final Fantasy XI, which was down until 11:30. In the meantime, I played
Diablo II.
Why did I not update
my website, work on my Go program library, or study my Japanese? (Actually, I did study some Japanese, but not much...) Well, for one thing, the cables for my camera have still not arrived from my grandparents-in-law's house, where I left them, so I can't really upload any pictures. That's no excuse, though, since there's still plenty of work to be done, such as implementing the administration access and putting in more personal links. My Go library needs to be reworked, too. I know what I need to do and the direction I need to take, but I find myself playing video games instead...
But then, I ask myself... is that bad? I'm having fun. It's what I enjoy doing. The other projects are things I enjoy doing, too. Of course, the answer comes in that video games don't improve my skills (other than manual dexterity). Becoming a better programmer, designer, and artist through practice are more important.
So, there it is. It all comes down to discipline, which I lack in great degrees.
Self discipline is that which, next to virtue, truly and essentially raises one man above another. -- Joseph Addison
