It was an evening like any other. He'd finished the office work about an hour ago, made dinner (put some of it in the fridge for Snake), walked the dog and cleaned the bathroom. The club would close later that night, but he'd just given the key to one of his employees and told them to do it in his place.
It didn't matter if Big Boss was sitting around down there or up here -- he didn't have much to do once the 'special event' was over. Truth be told, nowadays, he never had much to do, and whenever he realized that, he began to feel restless. Snake had taken over everything that had been his purpose in life before and told him to stay at home, where it's safe. Stay right here, back home, in Outer Heaven, never leave. It's become more like a cage. A grave, even.
Big Boss averted his attention momentarily from the TV (some late-night talkshow was on discussing the ethics of cloning or something) to look down at the dog that was weakly pawing at his leg. He leaned down and lifted him up, onto the couch, where he lay down on his stomach to sleep as Big Boss stroked his fur. He was just sleeping the whole day and too old to even get onto the couch by himself. Weak joints and muscles.
Big Boss knew that he probably wouldn't make it much longer. A year, at best. Snake knew that too, but he always avoided talking about it. Children always find it hard to let go of their favourite things, even if they know its inevitable.
Big Boss looked back at the TV, but he didn't know what they were talking about anymore.
