There was no mistake: Itachi’s condition had worsen with naps that only succeeded a few hours every several days, with a diet of nothing but over-sugared tea and ice-cream along with other sweets ( -- And still, if he was questioned, he would have only stated that it was purely for their energy in which he consumed them, not for the pleasant taste. But even that was partly a lie -- ) his skin placid with blue-purple veins visible passed the thin layer of flesh with hollow eye-sockets and pale lips that complimented his now-spidery limbs ( ... )

Nill hadn’t mentioned anything about Kazama to Itachi since she’d spoken with him over the network, for fear that he simply wouldn’t believe her or that he wouldn’t accept it and just leave. Despite the initial protests Shikamaru and Yosuke had originally made when Nill had expressed her want to search for Kazama down in Abyss, when she inevitably was able to go down with Itachi neither of the boys had been able to say she couldn’t anymore (nothing beat Itachi’s authority, it seemed) so often when Itachi would search for his Kouhai, Nill would be at his side, whether in Abyss or Elysium-though she had often made sure to wear a hooded coat to hide her hair and keep her wings out of sight. Even if she hadn’t been allowed to go with him every time that Itachi had left, she went at least once a week and at the most five or six times. If anyone could see the effects of Itachi's determination and how little he took care of himself anymore, it was her ( ... )

Waiting out in the corridor with his hands shoved in his pockets, Kazama had been staring blankly at some potted plants and other junk scattered along the hallway. Not so much that it was interesting, but because he wasn't sure what to do with himself. Already, he wondered if perhaps he should have come later. A month in isolation had returned him closer to his original distaste for any sort of company, he had glanced back down to the floor, leaning against the opposite wall as he waited ( ... )

Even with his own kouhai visible, Itachi made no objections to recoil from the other man. Having his own prickle with faint thoughts of simply fleeing -- to simply apologize that he could not find Kazama beforehand. And yet such a thought was pathetic in his own right. As far as Itachi knew, Kazama was the only one that was not revived from Battle Royale -- and yet he should have known that Kazama would, and could have, been traumatized by that experience. But that did not waver the faith he had for Kazama that the other would come back ( ... )

It wasn’t that she wanted them to reconcile, exactly, but-Nill didn’t really know what sort of man Itachi was, deep down, even if she’d been around him for extended periods of time on several occasions. The man didn’t talk enough for her to pick up on much, and she couldn’t read a lot from his expressions and gestures because he always looked tired and world weary. But she wouldn’t have been surprised if Itachi went to sleep now and woke up later to the thought that Kazama showing up was a simple dream or hallucination of some kind. And that wouldn’t change anything ( ... )

In a way, it was good to hear Itachi's voice again -- as much as he'd hesitated to return to polite society (or whatever imitation of it that he lived in) -- it helped to be able to speak to one of the few people that he actually looked up to. But on the other hand, the exhaustion was still obvious in Itachi's voice and expression, and Kazama worried, to be honest. It looked like he would topple over any moment. (At least, he thought wanly, Yosuke had managed to keep him safe. 'Safe' being an ambiguous word ( ... )

It could not be avoided, Itachi had thought. That he had to return to the Akatsuki sooner or later. One of the few choices he found regrettable and even now. Even with Kazama return Itachi felt a weight lift off his chest before it settled in his stomach. Yosuke, Shikamaru, and Nill had provided Itachi a place to stay, and he only reluctantly took it out of nothing but politeness while his main work was carried on during the day and his search for Kazama was before dawn. And yet, as much as he himself had trusted Kazama, Itachi was ultimately hesitate to speak of his new occupation. How could one speak of returning to that which killed it - even if it had his plus. Either way, the thought made him smirk darkly underneath his bangs ( ... )

Once Nill pulled away from Kazama, she shifted her gaze downward for a moment before peeking up at him through her bangs, expression caught somewhere between slightly shy and rather guilty-but what she received in turn from the man was unexpected, and she blinked, slightly wide blue eyes staring up at him rather blatantly. Kazama never showed any signs of happiness-it had taken her awhile to figure them out, but his expressions were minute and far in between, and though they conveyed enough, Nill had never once seen one that might’ve been an implication of some sort of happiness.

The one she was rewarded with after the hug was the closest thing she had ever gotten to a smile from the man, and though he still didn’t look happy, the girl suddenly beamed up at him, her own grin bright and happy ( ... )

His finger kept dipping into the frosting of the cake -- opening the plastic covering so that he could nibble a bit on it, before trying to level off that which he took. He would look around each time in a guilty manner even though it seemed no one really cared what it was he was doing. Yosuke read the words on the cake for the umpteenth time -- "welcome back, Kazama" -- he thought of adding 'senpai' to it, but felt that it was supposed to be from everyone. Letting out a few happy sighs, he felt like this was one of the few good things that had happened in awhile. His shoulder slumped as he headed back to the apartment, having to stop to rest his back against the wall ( ... )

Nill's beaming smile was enough to put him at ease to some degree, at least, knowing that she seemed happy that he was back and had given her some sign of approval. And all in all, it was probably better than he'd hoped, this -- return. Quiet and uneventful. The way he preferred. The last thing he would have wanted was some large fuss. Though -- Itachi's condition was still worrisome, honestly. And Kazama partly wondered if it would be best to cut this visit short in order to give Itachi a good chance to rest. The other looked like he hadn't slept properly in weeks. A nap should have done him good ( ... )

At the sound of Kazama’s words, Itachi only quirked up an eyebrow before lowering his head once again. Lips opened to make a exhale that was akin to that of a dry amused noise that was dripped with something slightly cynical, and making his body tense up as he released it. Perhaps it was a selfish request after all. And how Itachi had mentally shut himself off from his surroundings that he only told himself that the inquiry was none other than completely stupid of him to say, but still he thought it was necessary.

But what knocked him out of his silence and brought him back to reality was the very typical Yosuke that came bearing with a cake. Though, Itachi was already on edge, as though something unexpected would occur, and it was just Yosuke’s showy arrival that pulled the trigger. Or perhaps it was just Yosuke himself with that voice of continuous babbling and idiocy ( ... )

It all happened a bit too fast for her, really. Nill hadn’t totally realized that Yosuke was out of the house, but at the same time, him showing up with a cake so suddenly wasn’t entirely unexpected, and she thought that maybe he had mentioned it and she had simply forgotten-or maybe he hadn’t, because if he had she might have insisted on doing it herself, but... who knew, really. It didn’t make much difference now, as Yosuke’s eternal bad timing had kicked in for the umpteen millionth time, and he almost ran into Kazama on his way in the door (it was a good thing the man had impressive reflexes. ) and effectively cutting the conversation between the two men short. ...Yosuke really needed to work on that timing a bit, she thought ( ... )

"It's all right --" Yosuke had started to reassure Kazama about being gone, not wanting to make the guy feel guilty about having been gone. However, just as he started, he suddenly found his vision obscured by the cake which he bought. The back of his head against the door as he stood with his arms still out trying to hold onto the cake that was now pressed against his face, frozen in place. He really had not expected Itachi to do something like that -- and as soon as his head rebooted from what just happened, he would say something about it as well. Until then, he just nodded dumbly at the statement that Itachi and he were even, as he vaguely remembered about having done something similar in a more public area ( ... )

As quick as Kazama's reflexes were, he still almost missed the way that Itachi stepped forward in a moment. And he certainly hadn't expected the wet splut of the cake collapsing that came soon after. Staring at the mess of cake that was now Yosuke's face, Kazama blinked -- letting out a low breath that might have been a laugh. (He'd almost forgotten about the last time Yosuke had caked Itachi in the face, but Itachi certainly had a reason to hold a grudge now that he thought about it.) The gentle grip at his shoulder and the soft words, he only answered with a small nod. Itachi was no doubt going off to get some sleep -- it was good to see that the other seemed to be alright now ( ... )

The reaction Nill had to the sudden cake attack was something fairly close to a surprised flail, and if she could she probably would’ve made a sound close to an ‘eep!’ or a surprised little squeak, but as it was the best Yosuke got out of her was a sort of notquitegasp noise. The cake had managed to hit her on the forehead, for the most part, though washing it out of her hair was going to be a bit of a chore... The girl just blinked up at her senpai for a moment before lifting a hand to wipe some of the frosting from her head with her fingertip and sticking it in her mouth ( ... )

"Ha!" Yosuke puffed his chest out in a triumphant manner, arms raised above his head in victory. Could really only do so since it seemed like Nill wasn't particularly offended by having cake thrown at her -- if she did, he would really feel like a complete jerk. His shoulders did give a brief shrug as he finally answered Kazama on what he said about why he shouldn't pick on her for laughing. "Well, it doesn't mean that I can't ask for a little retaliations ( ... )
