It seemed Sasuke's temperament hadn't changed much, either. Obedient but not in the way a dog was. More like a soldier. Understanding of his situation. Madara liked that about him. He wasn't like Itachi, always quietly scheming and eager to betray. Sasuke understood the benefits of doing as he was told. And really, had Madara let him down yet?

He smiled. It was a rueful one, twitching with bitterness. "The Omega," he said, "is a government institution put in place after my reign as a prince of this lovely city came to an end. Or perhaps... because of my reign. Its agents are meant to keep order in the city-- rather, Alpha's vision of order."

Madara paused, reaching over to pour himself and Sasuke some sake. "I spent many centuries eluding them, but Itachi blinded me and delivered me to them for the reward," he explained as he finished filling their bowls. "And it was during my imprisonment in their facility that I met you, though I thought you were only another one of their experiment subjects. It was only after my vision was restored that I discovered you were, in fact, an Uchiha."

Sasuke's brow furrowed. Itachi had blinded him? And he...had been an experiment? Under the Omega. It unsettled him greatly. His lips pressed into a thin line. This is not something he wanted to hear. Sasuke's arms stayed at his side, despite the unease he felt through-out his whole body.

But the mention of...Itachi. That got more of a reaction out him than the fact he'd probably been brainwashed and sent on his way.

His rage almost blinded him. Sasuke couldn't find his voice, and he wasn't stupid enough to speak in that state, as desperately as he wanted to keep asking questions. He hated showing this much emotion to someone he was meeting for the first time...even if it was his grandfather. Sasuke hoped the elder Uchiha would understand his silent rage; after all, he'd said something about them going on a mission after Itachi.

Sasuke picked up the bowl stiffly, sipping the drink quietly. The warm liquid ran down his throat and eased him slightly, allowing him to ignore his heated rage, "I see. So Itachi's working for them then? And you want them gone?"

He may have been jumping to conclusions, but he wasn't ignorant; there was a certain contempt in Madara's voice that couldn't be ignored.

"If only things were that simple," Madara sighed, resting his cheek in the palm of his hand. "In reality, he was just cooperating with them temporarily, and I'm the one now working for them. It was the only way to have my eyes restored." He glanced down at his uniform, then rolled his eyes up to the ceiling. The ennui on his face was like that of a hunting dog chained to a tree in a yard.

"But this arrangement's given me more freedom than I had when I was a lab rat, at least," he went on. "I was able to start training you, and we went to take down Itachi together. I'm sorry you didn't get to see the result of our endeavors, although I did bring back a souvenir. I'll give that to you in a little while."

He stopped to sip at his sake, those scarlet eyes once again fixing on Sasuke. Idly, he wondered if he would become the new target of Sasuke's rage, or whether the boy could find gratitude for his former sensei.

Sasuke let the thoughts settle. He wanted to rip the elders head off for his comment. Did that mean he killed Itachi? Did that mean Sasuke had lost his chance? He knew Madara had just as much right to revenge as he did...but Itachi had left it to him to kill him. His teeth clamped down on the inside of his cheek to keep himself quiet, unaware of the muscle ticking in his jaw. If Madara was strong enough to kill Itachi, then it would be unwise to go after him now. Especially when Sasuke knew practically nothing about him.

Only time would tell.

His expression didn't change at the mention of the souvenir. He didn't care for presents from a mission he didn't complete. He didn't deserve it.

Sasuke had another drink of sake, calming his nerves once again. The man was his teacher before, so perhaps, he'd be able to get him to teach him again. This was suddenly becoming a delicate game that he wasn't expecting to enter. A different topic. That's what he needed. But his mind wouldn't allow it.

"Why didn't you wait for me?" His tone was stiff, trying not to be offensive, but obviously annoyed with the whole situation.

Madara smiled patiently, painted fingernails lightly tapping the side of his sake bowl. "Because," he explained, "you were either dead or had abandoned the mission. Thus you were either unable to complete the task or unworthy. Regardless of either scenario, I could not let Itachi escape with his life. Not after his crimes against me. Betrayal is not something I will ever tolerate."

He drained his cup and pushed it away, head cocking slightly to the right. "Of course, it makes little difference to you now. You see, Itachi lives again. Revived by Omega but released into the Abyss without auction. Without owner."

The smile spread, devilish and wild. "We can do it again," he assured Sasuke, the eagerness edging into his voice. "We can do it again and destroy him so thoroughly there won't be a piece of him left to revive."

Unconsciously, the corner of his mouth twisted into a smirk. So Itachi was alive, and in the Abyss. While Itachi was a master at nearly everything, he wouldn't be able to hide there for long; Uchiha weren't exactly common anywhere, especially in the Abyss. Most of his anger his grandfather disappeared. Madara had good reason to kill his brother, and as long as Sasule had the chance to also.

It was a chance he didn't think he was going to have after the elder Uchiha had told him he'd killed Itachi. Sasuke wasn't going to let this chance go.

Sasuke's face quickly returned to normal, but his eyes still burned with excitement. It would be best to get all the information he could before declaring he was going to be killing Itachi himself, "What was the souvenir?"

Beautiful. It was always easy with Sasuke. As long as the path to revenge was still open to him, he'd follow it without argument. Nevermind that Madara was the one drawing those lines. Sure, get your revenge on Itachi, Madara thought with a smile. Then I'll tell you about all the other people you need to go after, Avenger. All of those other bastards who tore me from my rightful place and destroyed our noble bloodline.

Arms folded across his chest, Madara leaned back against the wall, relaxing. "That's something for another time," he said with a dismissive shrug. "It can wait until after you've accomplished your goal. That would really make the celebration special, wouldn't it?"

He glanced off, laughing softly. "Although I suppose, revenge alone would be much sweeter than any gift I could give you."

"So it is."

Something to keep him coming back. To keep him intrigued. Sasuke knew better than to take that bait. If, after everything was done, he ever received gift, he would consider himself lucky and accept it. If Madara withheld the gift after he obtained his revenge, he would cut his losses. Sasuke wasn't going to stay wrapped around his fingers forever.

Revenge. That word burned in his mind. That is what it was all about. His heart pounded and fist in his lap tightened. Soon. He'd use Madara's knowledge, and train harder. More ring fights to get stronger, to put everything he'd learned to use. It was perfect. Nothing would go wrong this time.

The red tint in his eyes flared, his own sharingan coming to life in his excitement, "Is there anything else you wanted to tell me, Grandfather?"

Madara could practically feel Sasuke's ardor pulsing in the air, fueled by or fueling that dark aura of hatred. Such a beautiful thing. He enjoyed just how much Sasuke took after him. Would enjoy it more when he'd reached his full potential.

"Mm," he purred thoughtfully. "There are a lot of stories I could tell, histories you've heard before but have forgotten. But it's all really just this old man rambling. I'll catch you up to them later. You already have so much to absorb."

He looked into Sasuke's eyes, admiring those young Sharingan. How he could shape this boy, create something truly great. "Do you have somewhere to be, heir of mine?" he asked. "Or shall we go enjoy a spar in the basement? We can't let you get too soft. Already the summer was lost."

Finally.

Finally, there was someone else in this city that was behind him completely and totally. The elder was someone who would help him hone the skills. Both would get what they wanted in the end. His fist and body finally relaxed, yet his sharingan remained.

His energy almost crackled around at the the thought of a spar. It really had felt like had been an entire summer since he'd trained correctly, despite remembering he'd been to the ring not long before the battle royal. The small bowl of sake was long since forgotten. Instead, excitement, hatred, and anger buzzed in his head.

"I think I could spend a while away from my studies," Sasuke murmured, not bothering to hide the smirk that formed on his lips.

"Excellent!" Madara exclaimed, beaming a smile at Sasuke. "There's no better way for a family to bond than to beat the everloving snot out of each other. I know you agree." Especially when it came to this family. Although coldblooded murder was really the preferred familial pastime of the Uchiha.

He climbed to his feet, and unlike Sasuke he had not forgotten the sake. However, he grabbed the bottle rather than the bowl. The stuff wouldn't do much to muddle his senses, and if it did, well... Sasuke could use the handicap to his advantage. He took an ill-mannered swig from the bottle, sighed happily, and gestured for Sasuke to follow him. "Come, I'll show you our favorite play area," he said as he strode to the door. "It'll be where I usually ask you to meet me."
