Shikamaru happened to be reading one of his research books when Yosuke came in, something embarrassingly New Age with a title like Chakra and the Path to Tranquility. He was used to nurses and officers coming in and out of his room all day so he didn't glance up until he heard his name. Eyes widened as they came to rest on Yosuke. Okay, so maybe he was unexpectedly (just a little) terrified of seeing him. And not for any of the reasons he should have been. The atmosphere was suddenly really heavy, like years had gone by and now this was some great and poignant reunion. Best friends and the murder attempt that came between them, a third presence on its own. But that wasn't what made Shikamaru so uneasy. The fact that things had changed, he could handle that. The problem was trying to get things back to the way they used to be. Was he supposed to? Did he want to ( ... )

"Yeah." Another moment where he wasn't sure what he was supposed to say except agreeing that he did look a little better than he thought he should. Than he probably deserved to look. Still hurt to get around with stitches in his stomach and his face -- or rather nose -- was now a hideous shade of black and blue. But, he still could get around. A brief glance up to Shika before back down to the floor. Why was it getting harder and harder to talk to people after Kazama? Thought he had a hard time talking to Nill about this all as well. Though, it may have been because Nill didn't quite understand what had happened, and ( ... )

Kazama and Nill. Just a few of several people Yosuke had gone on to fuck up after he was finished with Shikamaru. "Right," he answered neutrally. Did that put him higher or lower on the scale of Yosuke's regret? Not that it was a contest. He just wished Yosuke had come sooner. The more time that passed, somehow, the bigger their problems looked.

He wanted a cigarette. Or something to fidget with. Or at least to be able to cross his arms. God, this was annoying. He felt really open like this, not being able to slouch or hide behind something. It made it harder to get all of his thoughts out too, because then he'd really be open.

Well, here goes. "What's not right about it?" Shikamaru asked with a rueful smirk. "If you're sorry about it, then say it. If you're not, then don't. It'd be annoying to sit and listen to you talk about forgiveness if you're really glad about everything that happened. If you're just going to bullshit because you think you're supposed to, then spare me."

"Sorry." His head tilted slightly in a manner to show that he was once more embarrassed. Obvious that that wasn't an apology for everything else, but just bringing up senpai and Nill. Just the way it came out quickly -- more like an automatic response than anything else ( ... )
