Well, time to tally up the songs and reveal the 'truth' ;).
Was interesting to see what everyone picked for these songs.
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds - Beatles. Easy one up front (don't worry Saikogrrl, your mind can remain unblown)
The Man Who Sold The World - David Bowie (not Nirvana)
Tainted Love - Gloria Jones (way back in '64!)
Respect - Otis Redding (Aretha Franklin's well and truly taken it over, but it was originally sung from a male point of view)
All along the Watchtower - Bob Dylan (congratulations, nobody needs to be killed by fireflyfaery), though even he says that Hendrix does it better.
Hound Dog - Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton. Elvis stole someone's puppy!
Lover Lover Lover (You don't treat me no good no more) - Sonia Dada (apparently anywhere other than Australia you're likely to know it by someone else)
I'm a Believer - The Monkees (though Neil Diamond wrote it, and then recorded it himself a few months later)
I will always love you - Dolly Parton (kudos fasangel for being the only one to get it)
Venus - Shocking Blue
Red Red Wine - Neil Diamond
When you say nothing at all - Keith Whitley
I heard it through the grapevine - Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, three years before CCR made it popular
Higher Ground - Stevie Wonder
To make you feel my love - Bob Dylan again!
Girl you know it's true - Numarx (then made "Famous" by the whole Millie Vanillie thing)
I shot the sheriff - Bob Marley (another kudos to Fasangel for being the only one to get it)
Hurt - Nine Inch Nails, then covered by Johnny Cash. Does that seem backwards to anyone else?
Black magic Woman - Fleetwood Mac
Jeremiah was a bullfrog - Three Dog Night (though under the name of "Joy to the world)
Barbara Ann - The Regents (four years before the beach boys)
New York New York - Liza Minelli (then covered by Sinatra)
Unchained Melody - Sung by Todd Duncan for the movie "Unchained" back in '55 (props again to fasangel!)
American Woman - The Guess Who. A Canadian band. The song makes so much more sense now!!
You are so beautiful - Billy Preston
Everlasting Love - Robert Knight
Achy Breaky Heart - The Marcy Brothers (was going to be the Oak Ridge Boys, but the lead singer decided he didn't like it :D). Also.. keldaryth... ELVIS? :O
Drift Away - John Henry Kurtz
Bad to the Bone - George Thorogood, although he tried to have several other people record it and they all turned him down, before he finally went "eh, ok, I'll try and sing it myself"
Women in Uniform - Skyhooks
So yes, that was an amusing little experriment :)
Oh, and to those commenting they'd never even heard of half these songs, don't worry, I haven't heard a bunch of them either :)
