So, Linus told me to come here and talk to you about possibly playing some piano on my first album? I mean, if it's alright, I'd like to hear what you've got first, but -- the guy that the company hired is .. alright, I guess, but. Not really my style.

But of course it's up to you, ultimately. [Smiles]

You're the one who is doing the studio album? Of course I would love to play on whatever tracks you need. I haven't heard your music, but I trust Linus' taste. I have two demo albums, one of my band and one solo. I could email the songs to you if you want.

I'm sorry, what's your name? Forgive my rudeness, I'm a bit excited.

[Laughs] If anything, I should be apologizing. I barged in without any kind of formality .. Hell, who am I kidding? I hate formalities.

Anyway, yeah. I'm the one. It's my first album, so I'm being kind of .. picky. You know? I can't help it. You can listen to some of the tracks I've recorded thanks to my MacBook here, a little bit more towards the bottom. The quality will obviously be better on an honest-to-God album, but yeah. You can get a feel for it there. I play the piano and drums, but I realized after my first session that .. I can't do the guitar, the piano, the drums, and the singing if I want to live long enough to see it done. Which is why I'm trying to get other people involved.

And yeah, that'd be great, if you could email me those songs. Do you stick with a band mainly?

[Laughs again] James Carlisle, technically. But like I said, I hate formalities. J is more than enough.

Formalities have their time and place, but I don't think this is it. *grins*

I can definitely understand being picky. I know that I am probably overly so about my music, but it's my own creation so of course I want it to be good. Great even. I can only imagine that you're the same way.

I prefer to play the piano and keyboards, but with the band it's not needed as much so I play it when it's required but not as often as I'd like. With the band I do guitar and vocals. I'll send you the songs straight away.

Good to meet you, J. I'm Schroeder.

No, definitely not .. You'll also quickly find out that I don't do formalities often. Even when I probably should.

Right -- of course. I mean, you pour yourself into these creations, and you'd be damned if you didn't give a shit about how they sounded or how they came out. You want them to be as good as you imagined them being. I get that.

[Nods] Sounds awesome, man. I think I'd just need the piano for the songs I'm looking for, maybe some harmonies or something. I was trying to convince my best friend Jeff to do it, since he is a piano-fanatic, but he's too busy with his life to bother flying out to the West Coast. [Laughs]

You too, man. Seriously. I'm glad your buddy Linus mentioned you.

You say that like I'll see you in person. Does this mean that I get the gig?

I like to think that if you can imagine the music, you can create it. Of course I realize that this is a bit idealistic.

I can do harmonies and somethings! I will be your Jeff, but different considering that we have different names.

I'm flattered that he thought to mention me. Not that I doubt him, I'll just have to say thank you.

It means you got the gig, my man.

Hey, you're talking to a guy who thrives off of that idealism in music. The guy who practically worships the song "Imagine," by John Lennon, if only for its promise of a utopian world that won't ever come to pass. I get that, believe me.

[Laughs] Sounds great! My voice gets hoarse after I sing too long, so I don't know how they expected me to be able to sing for twenty hours at a time, then go back and do harmony vocals, as well. It'd be great to take some of that burden off.

[Nods] How about you, me, and him go out for drinks when this piece of shit album is finished? On me.

John Lennon is amazing. Both his message and sound are timeless.

That's because people who run studios don't think about these things. Their minds are on business, not creation.

I would enjoy that, on the condition that the adverbial "piece of shit" is taken out. Nothing I touch is that bad.

John's my idol -- I swear, the man was a god. Have you ever seen "I Met the Walrus" video? It's this animated film that these illustrators did to this interview with Lennon. Some kid snuck into his hotel room, and rather than being all up in arms about it, John sat down and let the kid talk to him and tape what he was saying. The illustrations are stunning, and the words that Lennon speaks are just -- They're amazing. You should YouTube it, if you like John.

True. Bastards.

[Laughs] Fair enough. I more meant the fact that it's going to be a piece of shit due to the fact that it's got my music and mug on it, but point taken.

No I haven't seen that, but I should look it up. It sounds interesting. How old was this kid? When I hear "kid" I think of a four year old, but I doubt one would have means to record the conversation.

If it has as much thought and effort into it as you say, it won't be a piece of shit. My presence doesn't hurt either.

Kid was .. I don't know, somewhere around 12 or 14 or something. Everyone under the age of 18 is a kid to me. [Laughs] It's awesome, though. Definitely give it a look.

Let's stay optimistic, then, and say it's going to be fucking awesome. I have this bad habit of self-deprecation, so, you may have to just punch me whenever I get like that. Or just roll your eyes -- I usually get the point.

If you're going to give me permission, I'll probably go with the punching route. It's more direct.

Works for me -- Glad to hear someone else is about the direct kind of communication.

I'm direct enough to get called an asshole on a regular basis.

It doesn't bother me. Like you say, there are worse things. I don't think I'll name them.
