the more you know, you know you don't know shit

I haven’t been writing in here a lot, or emailing people, or online at all lately because my computer is broken. I am pretty positive that it is easily fixable, but it’s just annoying for now, and will definitely be annoying during finals…

Kind of a lot has happened since I last wrote. The weekend after my weekend away with Sam and David was the last CIEE-sponsored trip, to the Eastern Region. It was only about 2 hours away, so we left Saturday morning, went to a wood-carving village with a lot of really cool masks and sculptures, then went to the Botanical Gardens, which were really beautiful. The hotel that night was AMAZING, took my first (and most likely, last) hot shower in Ghana, swam in the big awesome pool, ate a delicious dinner, then at night we all just hung around and swam and drank and it was so fun. I really love all of the people in CIEE, we all just get along so well. I think it kind of takes a special person to just pick up and go to a place like Ghana for 4 months, so I think we all are on the same page about a lot of things. The next day, we went on this pretty intense hike up to the top of a mountain, then we went to see some waterfalls. These waterfalls were, in my opinion, even nicer than the Wli Falls I saw the previous weekend. The water seemed cleaner and there was a better area to swim around. We all were sooo sweaty from the hike, it was so nice to swim! Anyway, then we went back to the hotel for lunch, then headed home.

Last weekend, Emily and I went to Labadi Beach on Saturday just to get some sun and get off campus and hang out. We left around 1 and it was so hot when we got to the beach that we got right in the water. One thing that I really hate about swimming at Labadi is that the water is really dirty, and this Saturday seemed particularly bad. Honestly, it was like swimming through a sea of plastic bags…disgusting. So, we probably only swam for about 30-40 minutes, then spent the rest of the afternoon just reading and chilling out. I really love Emily! I didn’t think I would be as good of friends with her as I am, but she’s just such a genuinely kind and awesome person. She is really inquisitive, and not afraid to ask questions, or sound stupid, which I really admire. I feel like a lot of times, I can be really shy or nervous about stupid things that I have no need to be shy or nervous about! Emily is just the type of person that will ask any question that she wants, she’s not afraid to admit that she is confused or lost or needs help, which is awesome.

Sunday was the CIEE Olympics, at Bojo Beach. Now, THAT is a beach. Can’t wait to show everyone pictures, but this beach was incredible. When you first pull up, there is a nice restaurant (where we ate lunch) and then you have to take a little boat across this lake, then there is like a huge sandbar, which is the beach, then the ocean. It’s so awesome! There are beautiful umbrellas made out of palms everywhere and people playing drums and the waves crashing, it was so nice and relaxing. CIEE Olympics basically consisted of all of the CIEE kids running around and playing games like football (soccer) and volleyball and Scrabble and sack-races and silly stuff like that. It was fun!

That night, when we got home, Sam and I hung out for a little while then watched Black Swan. WOWOWOW It was so good! I hadn’t seen it yet but WOW, what a friggin good movie.
Monday was my last Strategies for African Development class…it’s crazy how fast this semester went/is going. Monday was also Sam’s birthday, so a bunch of us went out to dinner/drinks at Ryan’s Irish Pub, which was a nice place in Osu. It was kind of empty though, like, we were the only people there, but that’s probably because it was like, 8 p.m. on a Monday night, loool. Then we decided to go to Lagos, this other bar closer to campus. It was a smaller group at Lagos, which was kind of nice, we just hung out in the air conditioning (until their power went out…bleak) and talked and drank and celebrated Sam because we all love him. We went home and Sam came up to my room and we were just hanging out for a little while, but he was REALLY drunk and kind of flirting with me. I don’t mind because I actually have quite the crush on Sam, but I’m not really sure if it is reciprocated. I think it’s more just like, he knows that I like him so he just likes to get drunk and flirt with me. SIGH. But also, we are such good friends that I really wouldn’t want to risk our friendship for…what? A month of hooking up then living across the country from each other for the rest of our lives? No thanks! But anyway, he got kind of fucked up and we both fell asleep on my bed. We kind of got more cuddly as the night progressed, but nothing ever happened and I couldn’t really tell if it was platonic or not. Buh buuuuh buh.

Tuesday was not a good day, just because I was hella tired from being out so late and stuff. Luckily, I don’t have to go to my internship for a week because they are on break for Easter, so all I had to do on Tuesday was go to Twi class…unfortunately, I accidentally slept thorough it. Awk! Wednesday, I went to both my classes, then Sam and I went to the post office in Nkrumah Circle to FINALLY get my package, which was dresses from Adrienne! I feel like an idiot for not picking up this package sooner because I really could have used some of these dresses, but that’s fine. I now have lots more clothes, yay!! When we got back from that, I went and hung out with Ben and Victoria, then the three of us and Emily and Morgan went to Alliance Francais for dinner and to hear Ben’s professor’s band play! The band was SO GOOD, and we ran into Johnny and a few other CIEE kids here. From there, Ben, Victoria, Johnny, and I went to reggae night at Labadi Beach for more awesome music and chatting and such. I almost didn’t go, but I was really glad that I did because I love the beach so much. The sky was so beautiful, and the moon was just really bright and pretty.

And today! I woke up with the intention to get a lot done, like laundry and mopping and showering, but all of those require running water, and our water is off today. SAD SAD DAY. This morning when I woke up, the water AND the power were both off, and it was horrible, but now at least the power is back, which is how I am using my roommate’s computer to write this now!

Exactly 40 days left in Ghana…HOLY SHIT!

friends, ghana, ciee, time, weekends
