RIDE THE HORSE

Everyday it was the same thing over and over again, the sun and clouds in the sky riding over them and the land, never seeming to end at all and when night finally came, Ewan jus wanted to collapse and didn’t. Night meant sleeping near, next to Hayden and as the days kept piling by, it was getting harder and harder. It wasn’t like Hayden was doing anything, and that was worse, that Hayden wasn’t doing anything and yet he was still causing this unnatural reaction. This was crazy and god did he want to fuck him.

“You know,” said Hayden, urging his black stallion closer to Ewan’s buckskin mare, “it’s not wrong, not really.”

Ewan gritted his teeth together and jerked his head toward the trail boss, who for some damn reason had decided to ride up with them today. “You talk too much,” he said, trying to sound like he was jus bored and not at all agitated. “Can’t you be quiet?”

“I think you like it when I’ve got my mouth open,” said Hayden, dropping his voice low enough that even if Mr. Wheeler did hear them talking, he couldn’t hear what they were saying. “The colonel used a say I had a dirty mouth.”

Jesus Christ! Why Ewan had ever thought Hayden was an angel, he didn’t know. He couldn’t even really think of him as a kid anymore ‘cause he damn well didn’t want any kid to be saying the sort of things that Hayden was. It was wrong, it was wrong, it was wrong!

Hayden leaned over his saddle a bit, not enough to draw any attention though. He turned his head and licked his lips slowly and all Ewan could do was jus stare and think that he wanted to be the one doing the licking. “I like you,” said Hayden. “Nothing wrong with some sport, is there? That’s jus what it is, sport.”

“I’m not no queer,” said Ewan, almost hissing that out, but remembering to keep his voice down.

Hayden smiled and straightened his back, drawing away from Ewan. “Me neither.”

-

They did it that night, when the rain fell and the tents were pitched, and Hayden had said to Ewan, “Get over here you fool,” when Ewan had persisted to stay far from Hayden and the pile of blankets he had to keep them dry on this wet night. When Hayden had finally had enough, he grabbed Ewan by the belt loops, pulled him to him and said, “You’re gonna get sick.”

But Ewan knew that Hayden was wrong ‘cause he was already sick when he lied down on the mostly dry blankets and felt Hayden’s hard, muscular body so close to him that it didn’t take much thinking to jus take what had been offered earlier that day. Ewan shucked Hayden’s pants, undid his own, spat into his hand and slicked himself up, and knew what to do even if he’d never done it before, pushing his cock into Hayden who urged him on when he said, “I won’t break.”

There was blood on the blankets the next day and Hayden sat on the horse like he was sore.

-

They started talking, well Hayden did and Ewan listened when they weren’t fucking each other brains out and they did fuck, a lot, but sometimes Hayden jus held Ewan like they were lovers, but they weren’t. Ewan knew that, his lover was his pretty Eve, back in San Antonio, waiting for him to come back. That didn’t stop Ewan from fucking Hayden, didn’t stop him from whispering some nonsense into his ear, didn’t stop him from doing the things he ought not to do.

“Stop that,” said Hayden, guiding his stallion right in front of Ewan’s mare, forcing her to stop abruptly and pin her ears back. “It gets bad when you start thinkin’. We’re not doin’ anything wrong. Got that?”

But it was wrong in Ewan’s mind, jus how much he wanted to kiss Hayden right now in front of all the boys.

-

They kept at what they were doing, the fucking, the holding and sometimes Ewan started to think that maybe it wasn’t wrong, ‘cause how could anything this good be wrong? He’d never felt so right before, and it wasn’t the sex, even if the sex was good, it was something else and Ewan couldn’t put a word to it, but he knew that he’d never felt like this before and he certainly didn’t want to let go of it, not when he had it now. No, he’d keep this. Ewan wrapped his arms around Hayden’s waist and placed his head on Hayden’s chest.

“Mornin’,” mumbled Hayden, rubbing his eyes with the backs of his hands. “Don’t wanna get up.”

“Have ta,” said Ewan jus as grudgingly. He didn’t lift his head up, didn’t want to, not when it felt better to have it pressed against Hayden. “Gotta get ‘em cows together.”

“Longhorn,” corrected Hayden and it would have annoyed Ewan a few weeks ago when they weren’t fucking and holding, and maybe that’s why Hayden hadn’t really said anything like that then. But now Ewan really didn’t care and he got the feeling that Hayden knew and it should have been a bad thing, and yet Ewan almost thought it was a good thing. Hayden only got at him ‘cause he cared, at least that’s what Ewan wanted to believe.

Ewan prodded Hayden in the side. “Get up.”

“You get up,” said Hayden, jabbing his finger into Ewan’s stomach. “You’re on top.”

Jus the thought of being on top made Ewan’s thoughts drift downward and there were a lot of other things that he wanted to do than get up, get the cows together, and get to riding them out on the trail so that they could make up to Abilene and then they could go their merry way back down to San Antonio and he’d get back to his life with Eve. Eve, his wife. His stomach turned and he abruptly jerked up, shying away from Hayden’s touch. “Get up,” said Ewan, not bothering to look at Hayden. He jus got his pants, pulled them on, and tossed Hayden’s to him. “We gotta get goin’.”

-

The months passed far too quickly in Ewan’s mind and it wasn’t long at all before they were heading back to San Antonio with a fistful of cash from the trail riding. Ewan tucked a few into his pockets, but the rest he’d be giving to Eve jus to get her off his back. Well, she hadn’t actually been on his back, not when she was in San Antonio and all, but he could well imagine what she’d be like when he did get back. Sometimes he really wondered why he’d gotten married to her at all, especially when Hayden was so much easier. All he had to do was flash his cock, and Hayden would drop to his knees and suck him like a good boy.

“You gonna be around next year?” said Hayden, pulling his hat down so that it shadowed his face.

“Dunno,” said Ewan and shoved his hands into his pockets. “Probably. Need the money unless something better comes along.”

“Nothing better than this,” said Hayden. He leaned up close to Ewan, close as he dared and lowered his head and Ewan felt Hayden’s warm breath against his cheek. “I’ll just tell you now, I’ll be here.”

Ewan jerked his head back and walked off like Hayden meant nothing to him and he could almost believe it.

-

Fall turned into winter and then finally into spring and Ewan was dying to get out from under his wife’s roof and get to some trail riding to escape her and her fat belly. He knew he ought to be wearing a big smile ‘cause she was pregnant with his kid and all, but all he felt was the burden of having to feed another mouth and having one more thing for Eve to hold over his head. She was already getting at him ‘cause of all the money he spent drinking, but he said it was just what he needed to get through the long days for doing the same grunt work day after day. She didn’t need to know that it was the only thing that got him through the nights with her.

God did he miss Hayden, even when he ought not to. After all, he was home with Eve and she was always willing to spread her legs for him, all he had to do was toss her onto the bed. No moral dilemmas, no thinking about how wrong it was ‘cause that was right and he wondered sometimes why that was so when things with Hayden felt more right, even when others would consider it wrong. Ewan shook his head and stared out the window at the sun, thinking that it’d only be a few more weeks and he’d be out there again and then he’d get to see Hayden again.

-

The sun was hovering in the sky and burning Ewan from above and he’d been waiting for Hayden to show up at the ranch for the last few days and still Hayden hadn’t shown. Ewan was starting to think that Hayden might have changed his mind about coming back, after all Hayden was a smart fellow and there was more that he could do with himself. But Hayden had said he’d be here and Ewan believed that if Hayden said something, he’d do it and that mean he’d come.

Ewan shoved his hat down and squinted down the long road, thinking that he kept seeing Hayden riding down the road on his black stallion, but it was never Hayden. It was jus another one of the hands, one of them cowboys that’d be on the trail with them, and some of them Ewan recognized from the first trail ride, but not a single one of them was called Hayden Christensen. If Hayden didn’t show his damn face soon, there wouldn’t be a job for him since Mr. O.W. Wheeler had jus about finished hiring the boys that he’d need for the trail ride and once he’d hired them, he wouldn’t be hiring no more.

Again Ewan saw and heard the steady beats of a horse and rider galloping to the ranch and this time it looked like it might be Hayden, but Ewan didn’t get his hopes up. His eyes had been deluding him for days and it could jus as well be somebody else. Ewan pursed his lips together and spat onto the ground. He needed something to smoke, but he’d used up his stash the other day ago. Nothing much to do but smoke and pace while he waited and not much more waiting to do, tomorrow they’d be heading out.

Ewan rubbed his boot sole into the dirt and dropped his eyes down to watch the dust swirl around like it needed to be blown far away from where he was. He didn’t notice that the horse and rider had stopped in front of him until he heard a familiar voice say, “I didn’t know you’d be here or else I would a come earlier.”

“You son of a bitch,” said Ewan, lifting his head slowly jus ‘cause he could and ‘cause he didn’t know if he quite believe it was Hayden talking. “What took so long?”

Hayden smiled that smile of his and said, “Jus things, you know?”

Ewan didn’t know ‘cause the only things he had on his mind was Hayden and that was it.

"Well," said Hayden, dismounting off his horse, "I'm here now."

Yeah, Ewan knew that like he knew he wanted to kiss Hayden right here and now, but he knew he couldn't. So he settled for a firm handshake like they were old time acquaintances and he told his cock to behave until tonight. Yeah, tonight.
