Necessary ingredients to write a climatic chapter in a ten-year work in progress:
- Laptop computer with power cord, for a long night on a dark porch with the fireflies coming out.
- Pillows and blankets for uncomfortable chairs.
- Playlist of Valentin Wiest, on repeat.
- Good-quality headphones.
- Jackson's Ride of the Rohirrim scene, played for inspiration.
- A certain amount of preliminary Facebooking and chat with. enthusiastic writer friends.
- Then darkness
- Silence
- Music
- A mood, an emotion, a scene
- Patience
- Perseverance
- Sound of rain, smell of sweat-slicked horse, feel of mud and grass and fear, short breath, racing heart
- Shivers
- Triumph.
