Where are you now?..

Dickens always makes one sad, ultimately. But Great Expectations in particular spreads this sadness all over one's life and hushes every positive emotion and magnifies each painful thought.
It has unimaginable ability to make one believe that any happy appearance of life is too easily destroyed by some passing stroke of bad fortune, which strokes are without any sensible reason and couldn't possibly be anticipated... Remember you mortals, how fleeting are the moments of joy!

But not to worry. I'm recovering quickly, and in general all the happy emotions remain with me, though blunted by this profound melancholy.
