Our Secret Place (a Fourteen/Jamie mix)

Feb 28, 2010 11:16

I made this mix months ago, but it only took me until now to upload it because I couldn't think of a good title for it. I'm still unsure of the one I finally used, actually. But ah well.

Anyway, this is a mix from my Fourteenth Doctor fic series, with songs I sometimes listen to while writing. For those of you unfamiliar with my fics, I first created the Fourteenth Doctor because I love to grab elements people often associate with badfic and try to make something readable out of them - in this case, I took "the Doctor regenerates as a woman" and "the Doctor lives beyond the amount of regenerations established by canon". I then grabbed my all-time favourite companion, Jamie McCrimmon, both because I wanted his story to go beyond The War Games and because I knew I'd feel comfortable writing him. The result was surprisingly interesting, as those two practically wrote themselves, especially while interacting with each other. At this point, I have finished two fics with them ( Jamie and The Rutan Relics), I'm halfway through the third ( Tin Men), and have some plot bunnies for more adventures to follow.

But enough with the fics - just sit down and enjoy the mix. A word of warning for those who are foolish enough to might want to read them, though: together with the lyrics excerpts, you also get a lot of rather spoilerish excerpts of the first one, Jamie.

1. We'll Meet Again Sometime - The Strawbs
Holding hands, Jamie and Zoe headed towards one of the many TARDISes stationed in that corridor. They waved goodbye, their faces filled with sadness and resignation, before finally entering. The moment the door closed after them, the Doctor felt like both his hearts had been torn out.

I only have my memories to last me the remainder of my days
For time has now decided that we must go our individual ways
The warmth I feel inside can more than overcome my loss
But this is me today and tomorrow I must count the cost
...
We'll meet again sometime
Though the way is never clear
My sacrifice is made
Everything that I hold dear

2. Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) - Marilyn Manson
He struggled to return to sleep, as it was still dark, but it was no use. His mind was like a whirlpool, faces and voices overlapping in a confusing torrent. The McCrimmon Phantom Piper, lightning leaving its fingertips. A strange creature, its voice as burning steel, forcing Victoria to identify herself over and over again (that recurring nightmare was the reason he could recall her name). The Doctor encased in a glass dome, silently screaming in agony. Monstrous, scaly beasties hissing at him. Talking potatoes. Pulsating cobwebs. A horse with a horn on its forehead. He knew this was all in his mind, and that it was all impossible, but knowing this didn't make the visions go away. And, what was worse, a part of him didn't really want these horrors to leave. It was like he wanted to suffer. These dreams seemed more real to him than the life he was leading now.

Sweet dreams are made of this
Who am I to disagree?
Travel the world and the seven seas
Everybody's looking for something

3. Dyna-Mite - Mud
The light emanating from the body was becoming stronger with each second, and the three Highlanders were forced to avert their eyes due to its intensity. Then, as abruptly as it had appeared, it dimmed and died.
Hesitantly, the three of them approached the body, letting out a collective gasp as they realized that, instead of the stranger they had helped carry inside, there was now a woman lying on the bed.

She hadn't been there long
When she told us where she came from
There was a flash in the sky
A light in her eye
And her dynamite light burned on

4. Cosmos (Outer Space) - t.A.T.u.
"Jamie, come back!" he heard Kirsty's voice calling. He turned around to see his friends some twenty feet away, afraid of advancing any further. With a sigh, he straightened up, left the discarded shoes and trousers scattered on the floor, as the door closed behind him - and immediately fell back to the floor once again, when the ground beneath his feet shook with violence and a familiar grating sound filled his ears.

Stars we don't want to reach
Scars we don't want to stitch
Go where we haven't been
Fly away, time machine

Clouds we will chase them out
Crowds, we will face them down
This is our secret place
Outer space, outer space

5. Benedictus - The Strawbs
The box had brought him back to the Highlands - in fact, to a spot he knew well, not far from the very place where he had grown up. He'd not been to this place since his clan had left to fight for the Prince. The moment he stepped outside and felt the cool breeze on his face, he experienced the same sense of familiarity he had felt the previous night, when he first touched the blue box. He trembled with emotion.

The wanderer has far to go
Humble must he constant be
Where the paths of wisdom lead
Distant is the shadow of the setting sun

Bless the daytime
Bless the night
Bless the sun which gives us light
Bless the thunder
Bless the rain
Bless all those who cause us pain

6. Doctor Doctor - Barclay James Harvest
"Look, what happened?" Jamie interrupted her. "If I've lived all these things I dream about, why do I not remember them?" He looked at her seriously. "You are well enough to tell me right now, are you not?"

Doctor, Doctor, tell me if you can
What is wrong with me
I can't seem to find the key
Doctor, Doctor, I'm begging on my knees
Won't you tell me please
What could be my malady?

7. I'm Only Sleeping - The Beatles
He could see from the angle of the sun that he had been unconscious for only a few hours. And yet, he felt as if he had just woken from a good night's sleep - something he hadn't experienced for a long time. He was calm, relaxed... and he could remember. Everything. All the adventures he had lived with the Doctor, without the distortions caused by his dreams.

When I wake up early in the morning
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float up stream

Please don't wake me
No, don't shake me
Leave me where I am
I'm only sleeping

8. Suddenly I See - KT Tunstall
"Now I know you really are the Doctor," he added, his voice now soft and tender and devoid of any teasing laughter.

I feel like walking the world
Like walking the world
You can hear she's a beautiful girl
She's a beautiful girl
She fills up every corner like she's born in black and white
Makes you feel warmer when you're trying to remember
What you heard
She likes to leave you hanging on her word

9. A Girl Like You - Edwyn Collins
Also, to his utmost embarrassment, he could now see that the disarming smile and the overfriendly (at least to him) manner in which she grabbed his arm seemed to be a part of the Doctor's new personality, and were here to stay. Luckily, some aspects of his old Doctor still remained in her speech and mannerisms, and he was glad to see them manifest themselves - particularly her outraged reaction every time he was cheeky or pointed out something she did not want to hear but he felt had to be said.

I've never known a girl like you before
Now just like in a song from days of yore
Here you come a knockin', knockin' on my door
And I've never met a girl like you before

10. Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and my Monkey - My Brightest Diamond
"It's no use trying to talk me out of it, Doctor. You know that I'm not going anywhere, so you can stop with this 'safe place' nonsense. You just want me to say I'll stay in one of those places so that you can then make a speech about how big the universe is."
She chuckled. "You know me too well, James Robert McCrimmon."
He smiled. "Aye, I do."

The deeper you go, the higher you fly
The higher you fly, the deeper you go
So come on
