Steven Taylor was a space pilot who crash-landed on the planet Mechanus, where he spent two years in complete solitude, with nobody but his panda bear for company - until the day he met the Doctor. His early days aboard the TARDIS were not easy; Vicki left before he had a chance to say goodbye, Katarina and Sara died, and the Doctor’s refusal to change the laws of time made him unable to save a girl he felt responsible for. He was ready to leave at the next stop.

Dodo Chaplet was a surprising ray of sunshine in Steven’s life. Her brightness, excitement and courage were both exasperating and endearing, and Steven found himself feeling closer to her than to any of the past companions he and the Doctor had had.

Dodo returns to her own time, and has her mind attacked by an evil computer. While recovering from this, she decides to remain in the 20th century. It’s not that she doesn’t love roaming around space and time with the Doctor, but she misses Steven too much and doesn’t feel she’ll be able to enjoy it without him.
