Wait... did that song just come from me?

I wrote a poem the other day in probably less than five minutes. We had just visited one of the few remaining plots of old-growth forest in the region and back at the homestead house there was a traveling poetry shed thing. It was a semi-open little hut that had strings along the walls with sheets of paper clipped to them and a large supply of pencils. Multiple poems would be written on a page and I decided to add one of my own on the fly. One of the professors had stopped to chat with one of the employees of the place, so I had only the length of his brief conversation to compose this. It actually rhymes, unlike most of what I've written, and goes as follows:

A quiet moment in the shade
of moss and thoughts
and debts all paid.
And only I
and you and we
can find this place
among the trees.
Where shadows sit
and hug the floor,
here I stand
at opens doors
into a world that was before
my time.

Furthermore, last night as I was walking between auditions and such, I started to sing a song. When I ran out of words, I realized that I had made it up. I liked it, so I kept singing it as I went and more words kept coming to me. I kept repeating it because it was in my head and so that maybe I would remember it later. I mostly forgot about it the next day, having written nothing down, and then tonight it re-appeared in my head. Everything was still there from the night before: notes and tone and words. I was quite surprised. So, I kept working on it and the rest came to me as easily as the first part did. Honestly, I know that the words are mine, but I'm thinking that the central melody is probably from somewhere and I just don't realize it. Then again, it's not so hard to believe I came up with it, because it is so simple - almost monotone, really - and would be boring if you tried to do anything else with it. But it's perfect for my words. I'm quite pleased with it, in fact. I've never been inspired to write a song before in such a way that it just came to me. I've tried to write a song maybe twice before and it was always just bad. My song was bad, and my way of creating it was like wandering around in the dark uphill. Anyway, here are the lyrics to my song. Singing it gives me a glimpse into the musical it belongs to that has never been written. This one song, that wrote itself, has nothing to do with my life or those of the people around me. Rather, it gives me a very clear sense of other people living other lives and their story, just like a scene in a musical. So, without further ado, the lyrics are:

-----
Don’t you think you’re pushing things?
We all know you’ve had bad dreams.
Something’s ripping at the seams
inside you.

Pull her closer, hold her tighter.
Something starts to strain inside her.
You can’t see her heart is breaking,
can you?

Here I’m standing, they’re all listening.
Wond’ring what the next day will bring.
You don’t give a damn about that,
do you?

And I’m almost done listening.
And they’re almost through waiting.
And you know that the scariest part is when no one is watching…

When no one is watching…

You’re alone.

Because
When you hold your breath too long
Something in your head goes wrong
And your eyes black out
And then you’re gone.

-----

I will sing it upon request, should anyone desire to hear it. It has a much more complete feeling when it's sung properly. It's very tense and a little eerie. Also very honest.

P.S. - If anyone would like to write the musical that this belongs to, I'd love to hear from you. :p
