"The postulate that 'what actually happened' did so of necessity is a classical retrospective illusion of historical consciousness..." Thank you, François Foucault, for that gem of a quote. Mmmbig words.
I love politics for teaching the word hegemony; I swear it's come up about a thousand times since we learnt what it meant and I would just have been like... wtf?
So... History coursework is coming along fairly suckily, but at least it's being kinda fun at the moment. It's a shame my laptop faces the window and I have no curtains. I've been staring at rain and clouds consistently for like 5 hours. No wonder I'm not in the best of moods. I wrote part of a song... which I'd post if it weren't so damn emo. Love the chords though: mmmmEm9 <3
And my Cicero book helped with my coursework! Don't you just love it when subjects collide? I was just flicking to the end of the Second Philippic to see what the next thing was and lo and behold! (love that phrase) *Nadia picks up the postcard she scrawled the quote on and promptly knocks her glasses down behind the record player, is total genius* "These Republicans were mostly young people who, brought up on readings of Cicero at school, were fired by them with a passion for freedom." ~ Camille Desmoulins, 1793 Love it.
I also found, in my reading of Cultural Origins of the French Revolution (check me out!), a reference to Lenin and Trotsky. Lossa fun!
And I'd be lying if I said taking a half hour break to read slashy fairytales on FP.com hadn't helped. Although, someone took Endearments off their alerts list - this discovery saddened me.
Going to stop rambling and get back to some work now, but I shall leave you will something extraordinarily happy!
When a cold wind blows it chills you
Chills you to the bone
And there's nothing in nature that freezes your heart like years of being alone
It paints you with indifference like a lady paints with rouge
And the worst of the worst, the most hated and cursed
Is the one that we call Scrooge!
Unkind as any and the wrath of many
This is Ebenezer Scrooge...
There goes Mr. Humbug
There goes Mr. Grim
If they gave a prize for being mean the winner would be him
Old Scrooge he loves his money
'Cause he thinks it gives him power
If he became a flavour you can bet he would be sour.
There goes Mr. Skinflint
There goes Mr. Greed
The undisputed master of the underhanded deed
He charges folk a fortune for his dark and drafty houses
Us small folk live in misery
It's even worse for mouses!
Please, sir, I want some cheese!
He must be so lonely
He must be so sad
He goes to extremes to convince us he's bad
He's really a victim of fear and of pride
Look close and there must be a sweet man inside...
Nah!
There goes Mr. Outrage
There goes Mr. Sneer
He has no time for friends or fun
His anger makes that clear
Don't ask him for a favour, 'cause his nastiness increases
He'd crush the bread for those in need
No cheese for us mices!
There goes Mr. Heartess
There goes Mr. Cruel
He never gives
He only takes
He lets his hunger rule
If being mean's a way of life
He'll practice and rehearse
And all that work is paying off
'Cause Scrooge is getting worse!
Everyday, in every way
Scrooge is getting worse!
