Tanabata Matsuri
Tanabata is a Japanene Star Festival which means "Evening of the Seventh."
It celebrates Orihime and Hikoboshi's meeting who are separated by the Amanogawa river (Milky Way), a river of stars that crosses the sky. These lovers were only allowed to meet once a year during the seventh day of the seventh month. for the stars were visible by night, this celebration mainly held at night.
In some regions of Japan, Tanabata is still celebrated on the seventh of August based on the formerly used Lunar calendar, while the other regions celebrates it during the seventh of July.
Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture and Hiratsuka in Kanagawa are famous cities during Tanabata because of their elaborated displays. Also, Tanabata are considered as a major festival in these places. Sendai Tanabata is held around the seventh of August, while Hiratsuka Tanabata is held around the seventh of July every year.
During the Tanabata Festival, people use seven kinds of decorations which has different symbolic meanings. The "tanzaku" or paper strips wishes for good handwriting and studies. The "kamigoromo" or paper kimono wishes for good sewing and wards off accidents and bad health. The "orizumu" or paper crane for family, safety, health, and long life. The "kinchaku" or purse for good business and money. The "taomi" or net for fishing and harvests. The "kazukago" or trash bag for cleanliness and unwastefulness. Lastly, the "fukinagashi" or streamers which are known to be the strings Orihime uses to weave.
The Tanabata Festival's popularity had spread beyond Japan particularly to San Paulo, Brazil. This city has a large Japanese population and began honoring the festival in 1979.

Last Saturday, 2009年7月25日, my university organization, PNU-Nami J-Culture Organization celebrated the Tanabata Festival (Tanabata Festival 2009: Hoshi Matsuri) at the Philippine Normal University gymnasium. We had lots of performances (dances, Parody and the story of Tanabata) and contests which includes Otakulitan, Karaoke, Dubbing, Otaku Feud and Cosplay. Lots of sponsors put up their booths to satisfy the visitor and guests eyes including Tokyo Tokyo, Talecraft, CSCentral, Cosplay.ph, We.Nid.Okane, and a lot more! (Haha~! I really don't know their names)
Performers are also in cosplay. I played the role of Miaka from the anime Fushigi Yuugi. Not only that, I gone of fan mode on one of the sponsors' booths, the We.Nid.Okane (WNO) booth. There, they sell stuffs about Asian Entertainment and I spent more than 600 Php for Hey! Say! JUMP/Gokusen 3 stuff. I got them discounted actually for I am one of the organizers of the event.

It's really hard to put up an event. It needs a long time preparation. Practices for performances almost killed us! Especially when there's a scheduled exam at the day of the rehearsals. Gosh! Everthing's very hectic. On the very day of the event, all are nervous and at the same time, excited. Some of my friends came and had fun. There are some problems occured but thanks to our newbies for they really did a great job! Also, The alumni of PNU-Nami helped out to resolve the problems. At the end of the day, it turned out to be a success!
